Ahh, the angle of light issue. :) Interesting! Literally all of my acoustic treatment here in my studio is to do with acoustics (not light, of course). The trouble is, as you might have guessed, is that people can't see where they're walking! It's way too dark now. I would have bought a few white panels, and/or used some brighter material for the homemade bass traps and panels, if I'd known it would be have been such an issue! Great video about the potential dual purpose of acoustic panels. :)

As a bonus, they even improve your room acoustics!

Most ceiling tiles here in the US (which look identical to yours) contain a lot of fiberglass. That dust will make you itchy, it really is terrible stuff!

Indeed, no one wants to be over-exposing their ruler.. especially in this day and age! xD

Good to know, going to keep this in mind when I get things setup in my new house :)

You beat me to it! What you have done here is exactly the same fix I suggested for your light box - an area of black directly over the subject to suppress specular reflections. Time to invest in a bottle of Black 3.0 - the world's blackest black after Vanta Black.

When building data centers those drop ceiling tiles are terrible do to the dust. So we did drop ceilings with drywall cut for ceiling tiles. We also painted the edges of the drywall so it would be completely dust free.

If you think it's bad working with those ceiling tiles in your own office, try working with them in a customers office.

That metal ruler is really useful for measuring things around live EHT circuits.

Auto exposure generally aims at 18% gray as an average so 18% grey matt background may be useful.

Fantastic Solution from an annoying problem. I really hate that ceiling tile crap too. It truly get everywhere.

Had a hunch it would be a light refection issue off the cieling. Photography has taught me about light control.

Nice that you found a Cost effective alternative to, the are black Acoustic Panels which are used like in Theateres.

The simple solution: Buy an 18% gray card. That is the exposure standard. Set camera exposure with the card in place and lock that exposure. The exposure will be correct whatever you put in there and colors should look correct also.

18% grey. get a background that is grey, near to 18% It will reduce your issue. This is because cameras auto exposure use 18% grey scale to try and correct the exposure. You can see this when you use a white background. The camera turns it grey.

I see a white ceiling tile and I want it painted black...

Another option is lashing a black bed sheet to the ceiling grid. Very low reflectivity, cheaper than chips, easily removed. But hey, Dave clearly has the acoustic panels just lying around, so why not?

Dave. I believe those suspended ceiling tiles are made from the slag from blast furnaces amongst other things. Please correct me if anyone knows better.

Those damn acoustic tiles...not only do they drop crap everywhere when handled, they also absorb moisture. I used to own a house with those in the basement ceiling, and the ceiling needed a dehumidifier running continuously to make sure the tiles didn't get heavy and drop out of the frame. (They were installed as part of a renovation by the original owner, and was far from the worst error in it.)
