How To Pronounce GIF? ('Jif' or 'Gif')

The debate heats up as I ask random people how to pronounce GIF. The creator of the GIF, Steve Wilhite, says "Jif" is correct... but what does he know, he only created it.

I've always said gif with a hard g. It looks like gift. Hence, i say it like that.

I don't know any words that begin with a G that have a J sound.

If he wanted for us to say gif with a soft g, he should have wrote it a jif as in choosy moms choose Jif (Jif peanut butter).

Hence, even though he could name things anything he wants to, it does not follow traditional English usage.

For example, I could have a company named the 's word but spell it XZID and tell people the name of my company is pronounced like the 's word. Yes it's permissible, but not everyone is going to know how to say XZID.

Hence, the pronunciation of .gif files doesn't really follow traditional English usage. You know? I said that twice so we can tell this out to the heavens.
