Stephen E. Wilhite, creator of the GIF, eventually conceded that "jif" wasn't a good pronunciation the hard G pronunciation was probably better and the one everyone else was using. He died last month. March 14th, 2022. He was 74.

Jif is a peanut butter. Good one too. :)

I use both, with a twist - GIF in English, JIF in Romanian (cause that's how GI is always pronounced)

My friends and I used to argue about how to pronounce "Reggie, " from the Archies comics and "Maggie, " instant noodles.
Think in your mind how you'd pronounce these two and imagine people using a different pronounciation....
I'm not getting into the argument about which is right:
It doesn't matter which side of the fence you are on, the opposite will always sound strange to you and make you feel irritated to hear it pronounced the way you deem incorrect.

if the author said it's "jif" then it's a soft G, all other arguments are invalid

can you imagine if it was a person's name? would you even discuss if the inventor of that name was right or wrong if the bearer of the name says it's "jif"???

It's Graphics interface format, so it's G as in Graphics, which is what the G stands for.

Anyone who was computing in the mid-late 80s (hobbyists and nerds mostly) pronounced it JIF. There was no alternative way to say it; it was always JIF. (This is why the creator of the format insists its JIF- he knows because he was there.)

It wasn't until the early 2000s when personal computing was going mainstream that internet gif memes became a thing.

A whole new generation of (now mainstream) computer users thought they had discovered something new and began mispronouncing it.

Now the mispronunciation has become so popular that is considered a legitimate variant, mostly by people who don't know any better because they weren't alive or aware of computers in the era GIF files were created.

GIF stands for Giraffic Interchange Format, so it's pronounced like the peanut butter.

There are about 1M words in the English language and statistically 1.95% (19, 500) start with a G. There is a Wikipedia page about words using a Hard G instead of a Soft G and there are 61 words on that list how about rounding it to 100? So 100 out of 19, 500 is 0.5% and you tell me JIF is an exception to a rule that is followed 99.5% of the time instead of admitting you never look up the grammar rule in the first place.

-I promised Maria to get revenge
-You are wrong Shadow, That image playing over and over in your head like a “Gif”. It is not the truth.
It is pronounced “GIF”
.GIF like a peanut butter. The creator said so.
