The “P” in JPEG stands for “photographic”, but I bet you don’t say “JPhEG”.

Okay but people making the comparison to JPEG, Scuba, and Laser I feel are missing the point. As all of those the first letter of the the acronym is still pronounced the same way as the word it corresponds to (Joint, Self, Light) while GIF would stand out if pronounced Jif as the first letter is being pronounced differently. Which when you factor in that acronyms are meant to be abbreviations instead of spelling out the entire sentence, with the implication being that you can substitute the entire string or words for the acronym, it is important thus that the first letter be pronounced the same as the word it corresponds to as it is the one that stands out the most. Like imagine explaining in conversation without the word in front of you: "That's a JIF, a Graphics Interchange Format". It doesn't work, you would have to clarify the spelling. I cannot think of any other acronym in which the first letter is pronounced differently from the word it corresponds to.

Also Jif is already a peanut butter.

Sorry to english speakers but there's gonna always find someone what says "GIF", just because different countries have different pronunciation rules, so yeah... I guess for english and italian its OK to say it as "JIF", in other languages makes no sense to say it in that way because their grammatical rules are different, in that case maybe you will hear someone saying "GIF" instead, if you already know how it pronounced spread the word, but don't be an as...ole if you find someone saying "GIF" instead

iT's pRoNoUnCeD wItH a sOfT G hE jUsT sAiD sO ok and Shakespeare didn't spell his name consistently, and never S-H-A-K-E-S-P-E-A-R-E on any manuscript we've found. That doesn't make "Shakespeare" wrong.

It is not jif even if one person says it is. This person would have to have invented the word graphic and have invented acronyms for it to be jif. Which they did not. It is gif.

soooo what this is saying is we should say Jeraphics Interchange Format? Because otherwise, pronouncing it as jif makes no sense.
