in the usual pattern of pronunciation in English,

a g before the vowels a, e, o, u = "g" (as in got, gut, gay)

a g before the vowels e, i =j (as in vagina), norwegian, gem, gel)

so GIF should technically be pronounced "jif"


obviously, there are exceptions but that is the general trend

GIF stands for Graphical Interchange Format, so you pronounce it gif, not jif.

Reasons:
1. The inventor says its Jif
2. Graphics Interchange Format is G.I.F, which has to be spelt separately as Jee Eye Eff not as Gif (Thus your G is for Graphics not Jraphics argument is invalid) there is a huge difference between G.I.F and Gif.
3. If you wanna say it as a single word then it should come under the rules of the language. Normally, as per the generic rules it becomes Jif

There are so many words in English which you pronounce G as J and you never complained. Hell even the letter G is pronounced Jee not Gee, never saw you complaining.
