Well it doesnt matter what the creator says. Its an abreviation where the G stands for graphic. Therefore its a hard g sound

GIF is an acronym for Graphics Interchange Format.
Graphics is pronounced with a hard G ... Guh ... therefore pronunciation of this is Guh-Iff ... as AndersAsWell mentions earlier.
