Damn...

Thanks for this. I needed to see it, so I can have hope. The pain is gone but it feels weak. I'm going to work towards sports and lifting weights again. I'm going to be strong again! 💪🤛

Not even one year ago i was exited about joining a powerlifting gym. Now my back is in horrible conditions and i have a lateral snapping hamstring. I probably won't squat or deadlift in a long time, but i will focus on strengthening my lower back and abs in the meantime.

Deadlifting today heard a really loud pop dropped the weight and fell because I couldn’t feel my legs that much and my legs were tingling. Then a huge rush of warmth surged into my lower body. I wasn’t sure if this was adrenaline in case I might’ve seriously injured myself. I thought I had torn my left hammy initially but a friend of mine said that it’s possible that I might’ve passed out for a split second and the straps kept me in line with the bar as it collapsed and woke me up instantly. I’m not able to stand completely straight at the moment, it really hurts to twist turn or even just lay on my stomach. Took two ibuprofen and it still gives me pain. Hopefully in the morning it gets better I’m hoping it was a whip lash form the bar falling and me still strapped in. I was dehydrated and on low blood sugar but still wanted to push hard 😅 lesson learned.

Currently 14 moths into left L5 protrusion, this is inspiring. It’s been a long journey am now there more good days than bad, and the flare Ups are less and fade away much quicker.

My mental resilience to life is extremely good, however, the mental barrier I am trying to break through is getting under the bar again.
The time it has taken to get near normality back in my life is so sacred to me at the moment.

I understand small wins to start with, but the first 3 months of the herniation was like a hell I never new existed.

How did you overcome the mental fear of re-herniation?

I have always had stress fractures in facet joints on both left and right side somewhere in the lumbar region. When it did bother me for the first time I got it checked and found out through MRI that I had it in the first place. That's when my doc told me. You most likely took a fall in your teenage and it has remained like that since. All I do now is listen to my body. When the problem is acute I stop pushing and when I feel ready to go again I lift again. Give enough rest and a break when it is needed and then gradually start relearning the movement patterns. Avoiding them completely makes things worse atleast in my case it used to. Doesn't matter if you have to drop all the plates and do it with an empty bar. Making the body realise the optimum leverage for the said movement pattern and learning to brace effectively is everything. Strengthening the core muscles is what will protect your spine. If you don't train those muscles they are literally attached to the problematic area, they will get weak and the central skeletal structure i.e your spine will have to share the most of the load if you ever have to pull something doing your everyday acitivities. Once you get comfortable doing the movement patterns again then you gradually start loading it with weights.

The positioning of your head matters, looking down when dead lifting is putting loads of stress into your sciatic nerve and you might damage it, and believe me, that is some pain you DO NOT want to experience, it is a living hell. So, you should look always forward or a bit upwards.

Who did you work with to recover from your injury ?? I've been told I may have a slight bulging disc in the L4-L5 and S1 area of my back. Been suffering with this for coming up a year next month.

I’m glad you’ve had a successful story, I don’t think that’s the best idea for all, and in the end probably won’t be for you either.

7 years. Actually had spinal myelitis, and some blown vertebrae, and a femur tumor (still working on that one). "Pinched nerve" they told me. Not totally untrue.

Deadlifting is the answer to low back pain. It just takes time and you have to do the mental work to engage the appropriate musculature. Leave your ego at the door!

Curious to know the rehab routine you underwent to reach back this level of weight lifting. Of course it is different for everyone, but want to get some insights, as my surgeon claims that i can no longer light after being detected with a bulge in L5-S1

Is it safe to do squats and RDL if you don't experience any pain while doing them?
