Been told you have a herniated or bulging disc and feel worried, down, or doomed? Being diagnosed with a herniated disc can cause all kinds of emotions and questions to pop up, like: Will I have to live with it? Will it heal? Do I need surgery? How bad is it? Will I have to give up things I love forever? Take a deep breath... let's clear this all up.

With all the information out there, it can feel difficult and overwhelming to get a clear answer or understanding of what's happening.

In this video, I answer many of these questions, as well as the others, including:

-Why X-rays and MRIs aren’t recommended for most disc injuries or back problems
-Different types of disc “herniations”
-How the size of the disc bulge impacts your ability to heal and your chances of needing surgery
-Research + Theories behind if/how discs heal naturally
-Why you should care and what it all means for your recovery

So, if you're dealing with back, butt, or leg pain due to a disc herniation- check this video out and bring yourself up to speed on what having a disc herniation means for your recovery.

Thank you, for this video and the talking points. Everything no other back doctor will ever talk with you about, but actually discounts you. Thank you. It's good to hear others share their pain, because so many times we feel like we are alone in all this. How is everyone handling their condition?

5:38, I could see how getting an MRI can becoming sort of a "self-fulfilling prophecy", where someone's gonna give up on themselves and do nothing to get better, such as lose weight, strengthen their core, etc. But to be fair, some will get an MRI because the pain becomes unbearable so you wanna see what's going on. I think having a positive mindset can definitely make a difference. My MRI looks bad, I've been diagnosed with L1-L5 disc herniation with radiculopathy. I think a lot of it is genetic or how your spine develops during childhood and adolescence. I remember feeling back pain even in my early 20s, and my back "going out" a few times just after bending over and picking something off the floor. Over the years, I got into power lifting, I did squats and deadlifts and I've gotten in and out of shape, as in putting on and losing 50 LBS of fat. I'm sure that made things worse. These days, I do core strengthening exercises and go for 20 minute walks, I begin to feel sciatica after 20 minutes. I'm still hoping my pain will go away.

Hi Dr, thank for restoring my faith back that i can heal. I went through your DIY guide and i figured i have all the symptoms you mentioned in disc herniation category you have in that video. Now i am wondering what can do about it to fasten my process. I have been facing this problem past 10 years on and off but this time its much worse than i have had before. I have been seeing Acu puncturist which helped to reduce pain and help me move. I would like to know how can i fix this considering i am house builder so i do heavy lifting bending forward backwards sideways all day. Any exercises diet supplement or anything else i can do to recover please suggest. Blessings

Please do a video on healing the nerve damage resulting from the bulge. For me this is more concerning. Herniated l3-s1. Discs are prolly healed but still have nerve issues from numbness to painful muscle cramps which are way worse then the bugle itself.

Dr. Charlie, you made me laugh about mr pucture, they said I wont be able to walk if I don't go to surgery. They killed me with their words, 100 percent you are right. Love you

I can't get an MRI for 6 months, public healthcare where I live has long waiting lists sometimes unfortunately. I followed your guide and clearly I have some kind of disc herniation (l5 nerve from symptom pattern) like my doctor originally suspected. It's been 6 weeks now and pain and mobility are improving naturally. However the mild-ish weakness in my foot/leg is very slow to improve, and the numbness in my big toe/foot/ankle is unchanged (to be honest maybe a little bit worse). I don't know what to do to fix it, and I've been told to just wait for the MRI 😅

I have a central disc protrusion at L5-S1. Been doing chiropractic and spinal decompression. Along with some pt too. It’s going on 4 months and still having a hard time sitting. 1st surgeon says they don’t wanna operate because it isn’t directly on a nerve root. Kinda scared cuz there is some improvement pain wise but I’m unable to work because I can’t stand for more than 3 hours and can’t sit for a hour.

What about compression of the lumbar spine, very painful, i thank you 🙏

Thanks. The problem in my case is although the disc healed after a month or so, I’ve not recovered fully from some of the nerve damage even after 19 months. 😢

14:44, 6 months gives me hope. Is it ok to do exercises during this time that do not cause pain? I like going for walks, riding my stationary bike, lifting weights but not heavy and nothing that loads the spine. I also find that doing bear-holds, cat-cow stretches, and half-cobras really feels great. I sleep with one of those elastic lifting belts on because I've found that I'd wake up with severe back pain just from twisting and turning over night.

I’m pretty sure I have a herniated disc after taking your tests but lately I have been having popping and feeling like small things are moving around. It causes no pain but it doesn’t seem normal. 😂 Is this a symptom?
