I play a rubber ubass, I EQ the high pitch string noise out. It sounds better to my ear to get rid of the percussive elements of the tone. Rubber has a real nice deep bass tone like a sine wave, but the higher frequencies suck with too much Lowfi snap crackle and pop, it sounds like an overloaded microphone every time.

Oh yeah those weird Ashbory basses. People used to say they had the closest tone to upright bass. Not sure I can really hear it myself. But also apparently they play and sound better if you dust the strings with talcum powder, although that sounds a bit messy to me.
