This reminds me of what we did in a garage band in my teenage years. We had no money for a bass, so we took an old Harmony electric, removed the top two strings and tuned the remaining strings down an octave and turned the guitar's and amp's treble off and cranked the bass all the way up. It sounded horrible, but you make do with what you've got.

The guitar layer also made a modified rig. They called them "Guitbass" and "Bassitar" respectively.
