How to EASILY record perfect audio for your wedding films

Wedding day audio is no joke, and can be the tipping point between a perfect wedding film and something you aren't too proud of. So, if you're looking for how to capture the best audio for wedding videos then you've come to the right place!

Weddings are fast paced and not entirely in your control, so it is essential that you know exactly what you need, and when you need it, when recording audio at weddings.

In this video I go through every single piece of what I consider the best audio gear for weddings that I use every single time. Not only that but I break down the wedding day into multiple sections and give you my gameplan for high quality audio for wedding videography This includes what I use, when I use it, and what the source of audio is.

In the first section of the day I typically use an on camera microphone like the rode videomic pro to capture ambient audio during the prep portion. The only exception to this rule is if the bride and groom choose to do a letter reading. In that scenario I will be sure to use a lavalier mic to capture high quality audio.

I use a near identical setup for the first look, and also use lav mics during the ceremony, though those typically serve as a backup to the main feed I get from the venue.

Next, my main goal is to capture perfect speeches at weddings so I will get a feed from the source as well as a lav mic or a hidden mic on a mic stand. In my opinion this is the best way of how to record speeches at a wedding.

Again, clean audio for weddings is what makes great wedding films as great as they are. Be sure to plan accordingly and capture great audio at weddings! I hope this video shows you how to capture perfect audio for wedding films and let me know if you have any questions in the comments!

Inspirational video, thanks! I might be filming a wedding soon with a Sony AX53 and a Rode VideoMicro attached to it. Both me and the couple are on a budget, so this is all we're going to go with... what sort of quality do you think we'll be able to achieve? Many thanks if you can answer!

Thx for this video. Its very interesting to see, how people catch sound during a wedding. on part of your video gave me questions. At around 6:00, you mentioned a way to get around level changes or mixed in music by the dj, but I did not understand correctly how. Especially if I am connected to the mixer of the dj, I guess having an output with less as possible manipulation by the dj is very important, as I normally do not have a chance to change settings while recording. As I am new to the business, It would be very nice to get a short explanation of how exactly you go around this. I guess the idea was to just connect to the mic itself?

Thx in advance and thx again for sharing your knowledge with us...:-)

Hello Bobby, thanks for the video, i try to keep my gear as compact as possible, so the 2 of the H1N is my best choice (also the rode videomic).. so i can use it as a lavelier mic on the vows.. however, i never tried to plug the H1n to the DJ MIxer Line In, is that possible?, meaning, can it be plugged in the line in with the autolevels on to avoid clipping or i will also need to use an atenuator cable?, if so, how many DB would u say it will be necesary?.. or maybe will be better to use the H1N near the speaker with a very low level setting? what do you think?, i would really love to solve everything with two H1N and a videomic. thanks in advance!

If you have a Rode Mic Pro and the whole ceremony will be with mics and speakers, will the Rode Mic Pro not be enough to get good audio?
I also have a Zoom H4N that i would hook up with XLR cable to the sound system as a back up.

Shooting my first wedding in a few months and have never worked with audio before... My goal is to provide them with the best video possible, although they aren't paying me much. I want this to build the foundation of my portfolio without going into too much debt. So do you think I would be fine with just two Tascam DR10L, the Tacam DR40, and the cables you mentioned XLR Cable, 1/4 Inch Cable, RCA to 1/4. (which I have no idea how to use / what to plug it into. Do you think that would be enough?

Hi, I am fairly new to wedding videography and am filming a couple of weddings this weekend. What would you suggest for capturing speeches when the couple will not be using microphones at the reception? In my kit, I currently have the DR-10L, the Zoom h1n with rode lav mic, the rode videomic pro and the tascam dr-40 but I know 4 people will be speaking? Any advice you might have would be greatly appreciated!

I'm wondering why you don't mic up the bride with a Tascam DR10L also. They made it in white. That should be a necessary part of the pre-dressing room shots. Most dresses have somewhere where the DR10L can be hidden or not as easily seen. You can use a Rycote sticky to adhere the lav mic on the inside of the dress and you're ready to roll.

Sir how about isolate recording? I use zoom h1n and Zoom h1 at the Reception, and Whenever couple speeches, some DJ's forgot to turn down the background music, and whenever we notify them again about the background music, some of the moments where the couple speeches was solemn and romantic are now ruined, so I want to avoid it by Isolating the audio feed coming from the microphone to zoom h1n before it going to the mixer, I know your tascam has that feature but I want some other Alternative as yours was really expensive we are just starting out as videographer, is there any way you can advice me how to dealt with it? What splitter should i buy to split the audio feed coming from the microphone that is going to the mixer buy adding one more output that's going to a zoomh1n?. If so pls help me.

Just getting started in filmmaking and trying to keep thing simple and affordable while I build my skills. I bought the Tascam DR10L to mic the groom for vows and for letters, now I'm wondering if I should pony up for the DR40? Is it necessary for starting out and not knowing the DJ set up? Or can I put it off for future investment?

this guy said "ONLY $600 - 800". I think I clicked the wrong video, aimed at the wrong tax bracket lol

Hey, thanks for the info, noob question here, can you use tascam dr 10l to record from the dj soundboard?

You don’t attach an attenuator between the H1N and the sound board?

Question. If i use 2 dr 10l and both of them talks at the same time. How was the audio at post? Does it sound like a double layered audio?

5:33 - the Rode Wireless Go attached on the mic was also a clean solution I think.

Always have a backup during receptions. Some DJs are douchebags and would intentionally have the line out peak.
