Pharyngeal placement. That's the key. I'd been misusing my chest/belt voice for years because NO ONE told me that the mix and bridge between registers, particularly when singing more commercial based music, was specifically found in the pharyngeal cavity until I went to the Army School of Music and learned this from the vocal instructor there.
Or at least the tricks my previous teachers were having me do weren't specifying precisely where the sound should be placed. It made me feel like my 4 year musical theatre degree was useless because most of the voice teachers during my time in college were still stuck in classical and "Golden Age" musical theatre land, and therefore had no idea how to teach more contemporary styles of music, or even dead against it. Now I'm undoing YEARS of bad muscle memory, WOOF.
