There's a guy on youtube called Steve1989MREinfo. He does videos where he eats old army MREs that he collects. He even did a video where he ate hard tack from the 1800's. It fascinates him to see how food holds up over time and he'll eat almost anything. Peanut butter holds up surprisingly well too. I'm surprised Simon didn't mention it here. Steve ate peanut butter from, I think, 1957 and it was totally fine.

I witnessed someone at work glance at the Best Before date on SALT and then throw the packet in the bin saying 'this has expired as well'. I was shocked. Salt, you know, the stuff that is itself a fantastic preservative?

I knew my Twinkies had gone bad when I opened the pantry to find they'd been making meth.

My mother died 30 years ago in 1988. I inherited a lot of her stuff, much of which just ended up in my garage. Not long ago, I uncovered the tins she kept her kitchen supplies in-- coffee, sugar, flour. The coffee was a bit stale, and the flour had an odd smell, but the sugar was perfectly serviceable. And knowing my mother, she probably had it on hand for at least two years.

On addition, Honey is not just everlasting on the expiry date, it is also a very useful medical remedy. And i am not just talking about a spoonful in your tea to help a common cold, honey is naturally antiseptic, making it an option for treating wounds. (Of course you will need a bandage too) If you do not have alcohol for disinfectant, honey works as well.

When the total nuclear annihilation DOES occur, all that will be left will be billions of weird cockroach-Twinkie hybrids... and, of course, Keith Richard...

Spam has always been a big seller in the state of Alaska as well. It is great to keep the hunger away if you are stuck somewhere in the Arctic cold. Keep a few cans and some beans in the can as well, and you will do just fine on the eating part of survival.

The first thing people think of when it comes to storing food is a zombie apocalypse but never natural disasters which usually happen every couple of years. I remember being trapped in my house for 7 days and unable to leave to get supplies due to the surrounding streets flooding, a lifeboat had to come and deliver food to us all because everyone in the area was unprepared.

Two more: Vinegar. And more temptingly Maple Syrup. A can over one hundred years old was found once. Yum!

My wife is from Hawaii... Spam is delicious if you slice it and pan fry it. I love it with rice.

I do historical reenactment, and I was a chef, so I've made hardtack. Years ago I made some for an event, then the leftovers were forgotten in a bag that wasn't used anymore. It was found about a decade later, the hardtack was basically unchanged. It had the same consistency and tasted nearly the same.
