People unfairly compare this scene to the similar scene in Wrath of Khan. What is interesting here is that Kirk’s death unleashes the most formidable weapon in the Star Trek canon: an absolutely enraged Vulcan.

The fact that he says that it is what you would have done the same to Spock and in the prime time line Spock actually did do this. He even said "you are my friend". Although I personally prefer the prime universe version.

The thing that made the original scene so heartbreaking is that they had been friends for like 20 years by this point but in this timeline they'd only been serving together for a fraction of that with like 3 hours of screeb time so for me it didnt really have the emotional depth.

This ruined the movie hands down. Spend the whole first movie and this one expressing that Kirk doesn't respect the chair or life, and then just let him cheat death... lol smart writing
