Honestly. Kirk is smart for noticing that the air intake on that gunship is the most vulnerable part of it instead of wasting time and ammo taking it down.

This movie was awesome! I'm sick of people bitching bout them because they're not like the old ones! The old ones are good and the new ones are good! They are all entertaining and this is coming from a Star Wars fan

Alot of people wonder how Kirk wasnt hit when Khan started shooting his ships weapons. Most people are going go say plot armor. I'd like to believe it's the zeroing distance that saved him.
For those that dont understand, zeroing distance is a term for when your weapons (ie say two machine guns mounted in opposite wings) line of fire converge. A good example of this in science fiction is in the star wars rogue squadron novels where they talk about how the x-wings attacking the first death star were zeroed to 1 or 2km for attacking surface installations while a standard dogfight zero would be between 300 to 600 meters.

So tldr Kirk was to close for the intersecting lines of fire to hit him.

Don't necessarily need to be militaristic to enforce a no-fly zone about important structures. Nearly every country in the world in real life does this, and in fact technically during 9/11 the aircraft entered no-fly zones and triggered a fighter dispatch before their collisions.

A few plot problems here. Kirk's entire reasoning for his conjecture that "this is only the beginning" is based on the archive attack, which, in actuality,  had nothing to do with the archive itself. The attack on the military facility beneath it would've at least meant moving the meeting to a more secure location. Considering that Marcus knew that Khan, being a former agent of Starfleet,  would anticipate the standard protocol, he sure as hell wouldn't be in that room, especially due to the revenge factor.

Anybody else wonder how Kirk didn't get shot in this scene? Dude was standing right in front of the table, between the other officers and that window. Y'know, directly in the line of fire.
