I've spent the majority of my 37 years of life watching Star Trek from TOS to Enterprise and everything in-between and while I agree with your comments on what "true" Trek is all about, I do believe that this take is a great attempt at keeping the franchise alive albeit not in the purest spirit of Mr. Roddenberry. I for one applaud what Abrams has done, love him or hate him, and I greatly look forward to this new entry. The reboot was a great ride and, after all, that's what it's all about. :)

The thing with a movie is it's hard to develop a story and make an audience feel sympathy for something too foreign. It works in a TV show to send the crew to strange planets because it's completely different to have familiar characters in an unfamiliar place. Putting Earth in danger is a powerful way to make the viewer care more about the results of the movie.

Gene Roddenberry would be delighted. He, himself, said that he would like a young man to take over his job and make Star Trek the way future fans would like it. And he did exactley that.

I'm all for edge-of-your-seat action & snappy dialogue, but the philosophical exploration of the future of humanity, (peaceful) space exploration, and the repercussions of contact with extraterrestrial life and strange time/space phenomena, was the heart & soul of the original Star Trek franchise. I wonder what Gene Roddenberry would say.

I agree, this trailer doesn't show much of what we've come to know and love about Star Trek. On the other hand, the ad campaign for the first JJ Abrams movie gave the EXACT same impression. We got the best of both worlds with that movie. I say we should give this one a chance, too.

Yes I would loove to see a Q episode, that would be really neat expanding that whole side of things from TNG. Although I don't think we can focus on new races, as this technically is happening before the original series started....
