How did people wake up before alarm clocks?

For most of human history, people did not really worry about what time it was, instead getting up with the rise and fall of the sun. However, the industrial revolution meant that people needed to get up in a timely manner, often before the sun had risen. This led to the creation of two very important jobs, the knocker upper and the snuffer outer. The snuffer outer would use a long stick to extinguish the gas lamps in the evening and then the knocker upper, would use the same long stick to tap on people's windows until they woke up.

As a British visitor to America I remember the shock I received when I asked my American colleague a perfectly civilised British question: ‘what time would you like me to knock you up in the morning’ …. Apparently we are divided by the same language

Although we all wake up naturally if we don't have alarm clocks, but the biggest question is "how were languages made?"

When I 1st heard of a job called "knocker upper" I thought it was something very different. Haven't heard that term in a while now. Lol
