How Did People Wake Up Before Alarm Clocks Were Around?

As someone who presses snooze on all of the dozens of alarms I set, I'm often curious how people managed to wake up on time before technology. Enter the knocker-upper - a bizarre profession from the 19th century where people where employed to wake others up. Here's the weird history of the job. Not sure who woke THEM up though.
