A new way to study depression may lead to more treatment options for patients. A book just published in the U.S. called "The Inflamed Mind: A Radical New Approach to Depression" examines the link between inflammation in the body and mental health. It's estimated more than 16 million American adults suffer at least one major depressive episode a year. Author Edward Bullmore, head of the psychiatry department at the University of Cambridge in England, joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss his findings.

Delivered by Norah O’Donnell, Gayle King, John Dickerson, and Bianna Golodryga, "CBS This Morning" offers a thoughtful, substantive and insightful source of news and information to a daily audience of 3 million viewers. The Emmy Award-winning broadcast presents a mix of daily news, coverage of developing stories of national and global significance, and interviews with leading figures in politics, business and entertainment. Hey, psychiatrist in traaining here. The idea that certain types of depression are caused by inflammation is not new, it’s been around for 40 to 50 years. We haven’t really gotten to a point where we address depression by lowering information though. Once I finish my training specializing in psychiatry, I plan to focus almost entirely on lowering information to improve mental health.

Finally at least there’s someone who gets it. I am disabled and suffered greatly with inflammation and pain due to a failed surgery. I have only recently realize the correlation between the inflammation and my back pain but I live it every day. The mind and body are one and should be treated as such.

Dental problems !!! This is an important factor for so many systemic problems from low grade inflammation -

I graduate med school/get my MD in 2 weeks. I start my psychiatry residency this June. I am convinced a lot of mental health issues would be dramatically improved if people lowered their chronic low-grade inflammation, and plan on having be an important part of my treatment plans for patients.

Research, the association has more than been suspected for a long time. I'm glad it's being addressed more directly.

Excellent info...I never could have thought that inflammation arisen from dental issues could be the associated to/as the cause of depression.😎😎

I'm even more interested in the possible reverse causality: Can depression (e.g. from grief, loneliness, "unlucky" genes etc.) cause inflammation?

Cut out your all sugar and your inflammation is gone. Suffered for years and after 2 weeks no sugar I’m perfectly fine.

WOW, the mind and the body of an individual belong together; nothing new to everybody I'd think. - Or did doctors and most of the people really forget about this basic knowledge? I don't get it... (Sarcasm)
