None of the cages shown are suitable for any animal! I used them as an example of BAD care you would typically see with "starter pets".
I think this is a important topic to cover. Many people buy animals, especially hamsters, on impulse because they look cute at the pet store. Hamsters, and all pets for that matter, are a LOT of expense and work. I spent over $500 in just the first two months of owning my hamster.

It upsets me when people treat them like disposable toys that can be tossed to the side when they get bored of the responsibility.

PLEASE take a step back when you see a cute pet online or at the pet store and actually consider the work and cost involved in owning that animal. Can you afford to treat them if they get sick? Do you have room for a proper sized enclosure, away from other pets? Do you have the time to care for this animal on a daily basis? Will you still have time and money for them in 2+ years?

Plants are great for teaching kids responsibility, without putting an animal's wellbeing at risk. Plus they are cheap, easy to manage, and very beautiful! ❤️🪴

Im so worried when I saw the thumbnail thinking you were going to say hamsters or something which I disagree with but so happy with the end, plants make awesome pets. Except I can’t really manage to keep any alive :P

I impulsively buy tiny succulents at the health food store, their names are Fred, Steve, and Jerry, Jerry gets little flowers on him sometimes during summer.

I have pets that aren't my succulents, but I agree that a plant like a succulent is a good way to start, if they can't keep a succulent alive, there's no way they should get an animal.

Get them a cactus and if they don’t kill it keep leveling them up to harder plants and eventually (with parents being the main caretaker) get them a few hardy fish if the child wants it and won’t get bored with them
