First off your not a doctor!!! I was prescribed vitamin D because I was deficient and have been on prescribed vitamin D for about 15 years. I am dark skin and my body does not get enough sunlight in this hemisphere of North America. I take a once a week supplement and always feels a major difference in my energy level. Please no disrespect, but you don't know what the hell you're talking about!

All supplements are NOT created equal. Vitamin D IS important to cardiovascular health. Do your homework. Get whole foods supplements made with mushrooms

Obviously, when comes to vitamin D, especially if you have some strange or odd symptoms, the first thing to do, is to get your vitamin D level checked.
( I was misdiagnosed as having a blood infection, twice, and prescribed antibiotics.)
Once I finally got my vitamin D level, checked, it was in the basement. Now I understand that the vitamin D test you want to ask for, is called, "Vitamin D 25 hydroxy".

By the way, it was a dermatologist who properly diagnosed the inflammatory condition that I had in my lower legs, as being, "Livedoid Vasculopathy"

I still have a very mild rash, now, but my vitamin D level is within the normal range. And the small scabs that used to form on the tops of my feet, no longer do. Also, the pain I used to endure getting out of bed every morning, is no longer in the bottoms of my feet.

Vitamin D deficiency has harmed me tremendously: bones, muscles, joints, hair loss, irregular heartbeat. I wish I had been on D years ago. Now I take liquid D and liquid B12 and liquid multi-vitamin. I never bothered with vitamins, but now I am suffering for it n

I have systemic lupus and taking vitamin D has made a dramatic difference in my symptom management. Also, I can't be in the sun at all because it activates my lupus.

This is not about Vitamin D, but I was a big fan of McDougall. I listened to his advice that we don't need seaweed or pills to get enough iodine. After a while i did a blood test and had a thyroid underfunction. After that I took iodine supplements, like Dr. Greger recommends. After some month my thyroid was ok again. Thank you Dr. McDougall, I trusted you and followed all your advices. Now I listen to Dr. Greger.

Vitamin D pills are not useless. I have arthritis in my knee and back. My body use to hurt so bad especially when standing steal or bending. The reason I was having muscle and extra pain is because of the vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D helps strengthen you bones so you won’t have so much muscle tightening and you won’t have to put your muscles in overdrive just to protect your bones. It’s worst if you are heavy or if it in a family genetics. Get checked and make sure your different vitamin levels are correct. If not, correct them. This day in age people don’t take care of their body. Vitamin D and iron people are lacking on. It is important to have a normal level of them vitamins. How important do calcium is to your bone?

You just quoted a systematic review and skipped their sentence, "When we pooled the 2 Vitamin D trials for example, we found a lower mortality in the supplement whereas the calcium group had harmful saying that having the two supplements handled together might have thrown the study off.

Greger's conclusion about vitamin D supplements and mortality were not based solely on the one meta-analysis you discuss in this video. He also discussed and cited a 2014 meta analysis which found that
" In all randomised controlled trials combined, vitamin D supplementation, when given alone, did not reduce overall mortality significantly among older adults. However, when stratified by type of supplementation, vitamin D3, given singly, reduced all cause mortality significantly by 11%. By contrast, supplementation with vitamin D2 alone had no overall effect on mortality."

This is not true ... if I don’t take it my legs absolutely kill me and my levels are not normal when I don’t take it . False statement here !!!

I've used Vitamin D during the winter and my D level went up. Living in UK it definitely wasn't the sun that did it.

What a useless analysis of such important research

Yes, but I work during the daylight and get no sunlight ever. So are you telling me it is useless and I shouldn't take it? Will you take that responsibility for that?

I think you're right - Vid D is a *marker* of various things, not an initiator of something.
It's a hormone at the end of the day! That should say it all. You can't take other hormones and expect them to help the *root cause* of some other higher-level problems.
As humans, we are designed to be outdoors and active a lot and this naturally tops it up from sunlight. The fact that we feel we have to supplement it is because we don't live that way in general anymore and that marker can get low.

I believe this video has a serious shortcoming. Jeff, you need to do a video on Vitamin D3 PLUS Vitamin K2. D3 alone, as I've read, is dangerous. But with K2 added the combined effect is very beneficial for both blood vessel/heart and bone strengthening reasons. I don't see the point in doing a vitamin D study without considering vitamin K2 alongside. If you have done such a video please let me know.

Sorry for so many comments. I asked you if you want to be the one who is held responsible when people who are deficient don't take supplements. The reality is that these doctors are responsible. And, now, so are you. People will have to choose whether to believe you and follow you or Dr. Greger. 65% of people will just do what you say because you have put this up. Dr. Greger has the same thing on his conscience. That is the rate in psychology studies of people who just obey when someone acts like an authority. In more than one study it was 65% who just obeyed. Of those who obey you, most will not listen to Dr. Greger the same way anymore because of this. That is the way culture works. These men wrestle these things through at such a high level. Dr. Greger has a team of 19 researchers, plus people like his mentor, Dr. McDougall and his friends Dr. Barnard and Dr. Fuhrman and Dr. Ornish, plus a team of moderators and a staff, to whom he is accountable and with whom he discusses these things with. Dr. McDougall said that he has been pondering B-12 for 40 years and still doesn't have the answer because of how complicated it is. You are calling D3 supplements for deficiency useless. Please be careful.
