I work in construction and am in the sun 5 days a week 8-10 hours a day in Southern California and when I get my levels tested it is always low. Sun is not always enough.

You forgot an important group. People in hospital for a long time or nursing homes where they are not mobile and unlikely to be taken outside regularly. Unfortunately the food provided to them also isn't likely to be rich in vitamin D.

You should also take a supplement if you're severely deficient. I tested a a level of 20. I started taking a D3/K2 supplement with no expectation of feeling any different. Within 3 months the back pain I had for 7+ years was gone. GONE!!! I was told that I would just have to live with that pain or take pain meds or do surgery. It was GONE! Not only that, but my hair stopped falling out. Prior to taking a supplement I was eating fatty fish several times a week and I was rarely wearing sunscreen, for some reason those things were not enough for me. Get your blood work done and do what you have to do to get your numbers up.

All I know is that starting vitamin D supplementation last year, between 10K and 15K IU daily, has made miraculous positive changes in my life. I try to balance with some K2.

My Vitamin D was 19, and probably was for years as I did not have it checked for years and didn't feel unwell so it was never checked. I spent an hour during noontime outside in Summer (at 37 N Latitude) in my swimming trunks to get sun. I got a major tan on the 90% of my skin that was in the sun for an hour a day, but after a month of doing that, my Vitamin D was still 19. Not even a single point higher.
After taking 5000 IUs/day of D3, it rose from 19 to 51 immediately. So the sun didn't help.

My girlfriend and I were already taking D3 with K at the pandemic start, but upped the level. We also take C, Zinc, Quercetin, and NAC, and neither of us (both unvaccinated) has gotten so much as a sniffle during this scamdemic.

I'm 74 y.o. I've been taking 10, 000 units D3 Nature Made for years now. My D3 test shows a level over 100, my V.A. doctors frown on it, as they do my Keto diet, after losing 75lbs and my T2D. They say it's anecdotal and they act concerned and then annoyed if I continue to describe my improvements.

This is one of the few things I would absolutely supplement. There is quite a few days in the year where going outside to get the sun is not practical. Nobody gets enough vitamin D in the winter, well at least here in the UK, you only have like 5 or 6 hours of daylight and even that is grim most of the time.

Multiple times through multiple videos he pouted on how effective vitamin d3 supps were and now here he is calling it "the worst way to get vitamin D!"

Anyone north of Atlanta latitude doesn’t get enough D for 6 months a year. We don’t have to be in Alaska. Synthetic or not it is a necessary addition.

Well, unfortunately, depending only on diet and sun for my vitamin D would leave me in severe deficiency again (single digits are not that uncommon in autoimmune disease patients). We figured out long ago at my rheumatologist's office that I need to consume between 35, 000-85, 000 IU/week of supplementation (higher amounts when I've been in a flare) to achieve a normal blood range, and my primary hobby is gardening, so I spend a lot of time in the sun.

I use the free app, D minder! It's a Vitamin D tracking app. Uses the GPS in your phone to figure out where you are on the planet then computes when you can get D, how much of it . It also takes into account your weight, skin color, etc. Or data from blood tests.

Get as much sun as possible without burning. Eat vit D containing food - although this has little effect. Take supplemental D3 with K2. Synthetic does not mean bad. There have been enough trials to show how supplements are effective in raising D levels. What he should mention is getting your levels checked - it is a cheap test. I had mine tested in November and it was 68 (US units)

Magnesium and vitamin d3 supplements are vital especially for those who are inside a large part of their days for either illness or work etc. I will never stop my liquid d3 and magnesium.

As someone who is homebound, I've been severely deficient in Vitamin D often. I used to take a 10k UI daily supplement and it helped a lot (as well as iodine, b/c I realized I was deficient in that too), but I've slacked off in recent months. Probably one reason I feel like crap all the time again. Gotta start taking better care of my nutrition. My current diet may be helping me to lose weight, but it's not the most nutritionally dense diet since a lot of things (like onions, garlic, cucumbers, dairy, highly acidic fruits...) make me sick.

Getting enough Vitamin D from Sun and food alone is almost impossible. Some people live in areas where you don’t see the Sun that much, also diets vary from person to person. That’s why people supplement.

In the early 2000s, I suffered a stress fracture from exercise in my femur. My PCP finally ordered a D level. 11, close to rickets. I began supplementing and am finally within normal limits. I am allergic to the sun with lupus. Feeling better now but still working on improving my health.

It’s almost impossible to get your vitamin D levels up if you live in a very northern climate. Food alone if you’re running a vitamin D deficit is not going to get it there. You need to supplement and my favorite way… Go south for the winter for at least a vacation and get out in the sun. Also, don’t stare at the sun but spend a bit of time outdoors sans sunglasses.

I live in Canada and use D3 drops (under the tongue)
If someone has underlying health issues such as Leaky Gut, Sibo, IBS/IBD or any other issue that can interfere with absortion, it may be a better option as apposed to taking capsules/tablets that may not be absorbed and utilized properly.
I've take'n 10, 000IU myself for several years during the winter and 5000IU during the summer months.
Everyone is different so it's best to get tested by a functional medicine practioner before taking Vit D3.
K2 should also be take'n with higher doses of vit D3.
