What to do if you're in the wrong lane at a junction.

Being in the wrong lane at a junction is inevitable in Great Britain. Poor road markings, signs or just traffic blocking your view of the road markings can mean you don't know what lane you need until it's too late. In this video I demonstrate what you can do if you find yourself in the wrong lane at a junction.

Thanks. I have been driving for 55 years and 600, 000 miles and yet I am always finding my self in the wrong lane at roundabouts with which I am unfamiliar. So I am grateful that the advice from a professional chimes with what I thought. was the correct thing to do. You are never too old to learn or to relearn if you have forgotten.

Well done young man 👍

Hey Richard, just wanted to say I passed my test this week with only 4 minor faults! I hit the side of the curb when parking up in the first five minutes, and I thought I'd failed there and then. However, I'd watched your video on mindset and nerves during the test and just kept going, making sure not to make any more mistakes. When I got back to the center, turns out the curb was just a minor fault as there weren't any pedestrians nearby and I did everything else correctly on the manoeuvre. If I'd let that mistake get to me, I probably would've failed on something else, but your advice really helped me out in that situation. Your videos were a big reason for me passing, so I just had to thank you!

Your videos are great and you are such a credit to the industry. As captain Joe says “ a good pilot is always learning “ Same applies to the drivers 👍👌

This happened to me on my test two days ago! The lane I was supposed to take was closed on the day of my test, and I realised too late that I'd gone into the wrong lane by mistake. I just followed the lane I was in and ended up having to take the wrong exit, but I did it safely. The examiner said it was OK and redirected me. I ended up passing with 1 minor!
It was my 4th attempt, I started learning over 5 years ago! I am so happy! I watched your videos after my earlier fails and they really helped me with general driving technique and preparing for the test. Thank you for doing what you do :)

Passed my test today first time with only 4 minors. I don't own my own car for private practice so i genuinely don't believe i would have been able to pass without these videos. keep up the good work :)

I discovered for myself the trick of going around the roundabouts when in the wrong lane or when your SatNav needs more time to update itself and give you the correct exit. This is the first video I've seen that gives the instruction. It seems obvious but most people seem to panic and barge into the lane to get to their exit, causing havoc. I hope more people come to realise that you can go round roundabouts as many times as you need in order to sort yourself out and make a safe exit!

I passed my driving test today with 4 minors. When I’m practicing with my instructor I had been watching these videos and got more knowledge and used it when I’m practicing. You’re really brilliant!!!. If someone has their test soon, don’t be panic, try to watch all of these videos you can easily pass the test. Don’t be panic at test time, try to talk with examiner what are you doing, why are you slowing down and be a positive mind every time.Thank you so much, I really appreciate your support.

I am a very nervous driver so I try to be careful on the road but roundabouts always scare me because they are almost never adequately signposted. Either it doesn't tell you which lane you need, it tells you at the last second, or it only tells you with a marking on the road that has long since faded away or is currently under another car. So very stressful when you don't know an area. As you said in the video it makes being in the wrong lane at some point or other almost inevitable. I am pleased to say that my approach to these situations is exactly what you advise so this video has put my mind at ease somewhat. My father on the other hand, who is a self-proclaimed "excellent driver" just goes in whatever direction he was intending to go regardless and if anybody objects they can go to hell. This is why these days I prefer to drive myself in spite of my anxiety rather than get in a car with him behind the wheel 😓. Thank you for your excellent videos and for this one in particular.

My driving instructor sent me your roundabout video when I first started and struggled a little bit. I needed a clearer visual. Definitely helped me a big bunch, so thank you! 😊

Great video! (useful in EU too). As you said-driving in the wrong lane and taking the wrong exit is inevitable and will happen at some point. If you drive in the wrong lane either unknowingly or because being unable to change lanes because of dense traffic and take the wrong exit, you gotta stay calm and remember that there is always a place to turn around or a turn/road that will lead you back to the junction and you can just repeat it and take the correct lane and exit this time. This happened to me a plenty times, specially in abroad or in big cities. I always got back to the correct path eventually, being nervous about taking the wrong exit makes it only worse. Also its better to take the wrong way than to put yourself, others or your car in danger. Like the situation with debris, I would have done the same (you risk a flat tire driving over it). It happened on multiple occasions that I missed a turn/exit because I did not see it untill last moment and was driving too fast to take it, so I just went the wrong way for like 5 minutes and then turned around and backtracked or found an alternate route. Thats better than risking an accident or a dangerous situation. Thanks for the vid!

I passed today with 4 minors in Glasgow and your videos have played a huge part in my progress. My instructor changed careers before I was test ready, without these videos I wouldn’t have passed.

Thanks to your videos you've helped me to pass my test 1st time with 2 minors! I was overly hesitant at roundabouts and your videos helped me to understand them and determine when I can go. My instructor also had a Leon 1.5 19 plate, newer so it had an electric handbrake compared to the 13 plate so it was also a help to watch videos using the same car.

Nearly 48 years ago on my test I made a boob on what direction the examiner wanted me to take, he wanted me to go straight on and do a right turn at the lights further on, but I misinterpreted what he said and I did mirror and signalled to turn at the previous right turn and started to slow when he corrected me of which I safely changed course and carried on to the correct right turn, I suppose it was just a bit of nervousness there, which I think he understood and passed me 1st time.😅
I enjoy the videos which gives me a brush up on the rules and safety. Thanks.
