Years ago my girlfriend and I were totally horrified as a big German shepherd came out of a yard as we walked on the sidewalk. He was sprinting towards us and growling and barking.
I shoved her behind me and without thinking shouted "SIT!!" and he did.
My girlfriend almost fainted and I didn't know what to do next. Thank God the owner came out leashed it and apologized. I honestly thought we were going to be torn to pieces or worse. Luckily for us, the dog had been trained in English.

Dominance works, but most people tremble in fear and it induces the dogs attack reflex. Yes, it's not something that comes naturally to us modern humans, but remember that a single dog can be killed before it kills you, although do not think you will not be in pain after, because you will. Simply put, fight knowing failure equals death! Those wondering about me, no I'm no Navy seal or trained killer, but I've encountered several dogs in my life that luckily could sense that I was going to fight to the death and backed off. That is, all but one. This dog attacked me by jumping up and grabbing my left arm on a winter's day, and being a pitbull it locked on and thrashed. I felt a sharp sensation, followed by a sort of burning from the sheer grip of it. I can't explain what came over me after the attack began, but fear was not present as I repeatedly struck the dog who seemed to feel no pain, but instead it was as if I reached a meditative state of focus. I know that might seem counterintuitive to some, but it is the best way I can describe it. The world fell away and my only thought was hurting this dog as badly as needed so he'd release my arm. After my relentless beating failed, I lifted the dog up by its grip and fell with all the force I had left, hoping my 275 lb body would crush it, and it finally let go as my buddy who owned the dog came over in shock. The dog eventually succumbed to eternal bleeding from broken bones. Others who saw the whole ordeal would later explain the gaps in my memory, as I could remember the state of mind and some details, but after the adrenaline wore off I felt hazy in general. To me it seemed that it was a longer fight than it was when I later reflected, but others told me it was fast and brutal. I share this story because I still love dogs and want to tell anyone reading this that there's an unbelievable amount of strength in you! I honestly don't advise engaging if you don't need to, but know if and when that time comes, you choose the outcome, not your attacker. God bless, take care.

I would try talking rationally with the dog. Find an area of common interest and sit down and have an intellectual conversation about the history and implications that violence has on society.

Some years back, I was walking along a deserted residential road, when suddenly a huge pit bull mastiff type dog appeared and started charging towards me, snarling and in full attack mode. Without thinking, I roared my head off and ran at it. Fast. The dog sort of skidded to a halt almost like in one of those cartoons, landing on its backside as I continued to run and scream at maximum volume. At the time I thought of myself like an invincible machine and that I was going to kill it(all 120 pounds of me!) just with my rage. Fortunately the dog bought the whole act. (I pretty much bought into it myself, I have to say) and it ran off with it's tail between its legs. It looked quite funny as I remember. By that time, people had started coming out of their houses and I suddenly felt ever so slightly embarrassed but also massively relieved that I hadn't been ripped to pieces by one of the most dangerous dogs you can ever encounter. I wouldn't have stood a chance if my weird instinctive tactic hadn't succeeded on that day.

I didn't see the dog again so I think maybe one of the neighbours reported it(it was often in the front garden making a lot of noise and behaving aggressively towards passersby before this incident occurred).
