If you want to stick with Unraid, you could in theory create a Ubuntu VM on your unraid server and pass through your graphics card to it.

Some quick linux tips. You can autocomplete filenames by pressing tab (will autocomplete until the next filename difference if any). You can also chain multiple apt-get lines into one by seperating the packages with a space. "apt-get install gcc binutils make linux-source"

My Sweet Spot is Ubuntu + ZFS + Docker/Portainer + Webmin. This is how to get an ubuntu to have a scalable filesystem like un-raid, plus be able to run almost any software you want with docker. I was an Ubuntu Noob when I started, but quickly became adept at setting these things up. You could also start with Ansible Nas which executes some automation to install some pretty powerful software.

jason you can run ubuntu in unraid as a VM and passthrough the GPU. You get the best of both worlds.

In short, it replaces the bzimage and bzroot files on your flash drive with patched versions with the NVidia drivers installed and a few other tweaks to get docker passthru to work correctly. The catch is all updates need to be downloaded and applied thru the Nvidia plugin found in the settings tab. If you use the Tools>Update OS route, unRAID will replace the patched files with the factory non-patched versions. I can apply the patch fine in this video to the unRAID os, but without re-creating the updated bz files, the changes will not persist across reboots of the unRAID OS. I have reached out to the LinuxServerIO guys and have asked if they can add the patch, either by default or as an extra option. This could be a game changer for those of us with Plex servers and some slightly older gaming cards sitting around. Beats replacing motherboards and CPUs as my server and users continue to grow.

Couldn't you just make a Ubuntu VM on unraid and do the exact same thing?

There is now a LinuxServer.io plugin for unRAID that allows you to do this without jumping through hoops and running VM's.

UnRaid's latest beta might make it possible to natively run the Plex Docker with this. For what it's worth, I was able to install the patch as well as have 10 transcoding sessions running at once.

I am not certain about unlocking the gpu in unraid, which was amazing thank you for the video going to give it a try. If you can get a loaner or happen to find a cheap nvidia quadro p2000, these cards don't have that lock on it. Food for thought.

But has anyone attempted running Plex transcoding using one of the nVidia P106 GTX1060 equivalent mining GPUs. This would seem perfect to use for VM passthrough transcoding lacking video outputs.

I was thinking. I have FreeNas and I have my plex on there. Now that I see this video. if I can use Transcoding on there. What I can do is build a computer with a good video card and just Iscsi a drive over were all my videos are stored. and go about it that way. I have 10gb between my systems. So that should not cause me a large problem. Humm got me to thinking.

Are you going to end up vmifying your plex server to take advantage of this hack? Do you still run a storage server and a transcode server or are they all in one? I totally agree with you hardware transcoding quality is just as good as software right now.
