When the TechQuickie logo has been updated for the first time in just about 9 years: *Wait, that's illegal*

I feel like with an informational channel like this where i tend to actually want to learn something rather than just mostly being entertained (comparing to short circuit and LTT) a title actually describing the content would be benefitial

Watching this after having successfully downloaded 8gb of ram and graphics card 😇

So its "cheaper" and easier to make pre-soldered stuff instead of sockets and upgrade paths. So glad they're passing those savings onto us, I was worried my next graphics card upgrade was going to be over $1000.

Nvidia wants more money but then why aren't we getting more vram?

Well I'd like to debunk the adding more soldered VRAM point;
Someone has successfully made a 16GB RTX 3070 by replacing the 1GB VRAM chips for 2GB VRAM chips, the card was finicky but with EVGA PX1 using boost lock the card became stable and was able to provide that promised 2080 Ti performance without the 8GB VRAM limitations, the card succeeded in running an unoptimized 4K game using 15.7GB of VRAM without stuttering while a stock 3070 fell apart right beside it

0:05 OMG I'm old. When I was a kid, I used my hard earned money just to buy a video memory upgrade.

Still looking forward to the day we can download more RAM 😢

James: Have you ever wondered why you can't do that on your graphics card?

Me: No, but I wondered why they stopped. We used to do that with our graphics cards!

Even when Linus is not around, the drop rate hasnt changed.
They learnt from the best and they continue his legacy.

I did enjoy the Vega and Radeon VII having the HBCC feature to allow the HBM2 to utilize additional system memory as lower priority VRAM. Then again the VII had 16GB to start, but adding another 16-32GB of system memory really did help on some higher resolution projects in resolve.

its interesting how a lot of these hosts were really awkward at hosting when they started and how natural they are at it now

Forgot to mention that many GPU versions are just binned versions of the same card, and even some different cards use the same memory chips. You can indeed solder larger memory chips in.
There are stability issues, as shown a couple weeks back when a guy actually did this.
But besides conserving space and the companies not supporting it or really wanting you to take them apart, it is theoretically possible.

With the size and power of GPUs these days, they really need to become modular; socketable cores and RAM on a reusable daughterboard. Wouldn't hurt either if the coolers were given a mounting standard, for reusability and swapping ease.
With this standardization, may need to introduce a second 24pin head in PSUs.

Oh, the times. Back in the day I upgraded my Cirrus Logic from 1MB to 2MB, by buying two 512KB modules 😅
