Reviewing the USAA Safe Pilot APP

I walk through the strengths and weaknesses of the USAA Safe Pilot App. Is it worth using for the discount?

My initial reaction was that is felt like Big Brother but I got over that. As a former English teacher I am amazed at how many people misspell Brakes and braking (stepping on the brake). Give me a break!

This is a really good review. I have had a small number of dings but I'm still at 30% discount. I think that covers most of the inaccury season app. If it was so easy to appeal a ding it would be abused by people who are a lot less honest than you or I. Cheers!

I found out the hard way that even pulling over to take a call and leaving the phone connected to the hands-free mode dings you. If I can safely pull over, I turn the car off and take the call manually, then there's no ding. The harsh braking part has its own frustration. It really causes me to go through yellow lights to avoid the ding. If you're traveling the speed limit at 45 mph and a light turns yellow, braking for that light to avoid running it will get you a ding.

I disagree. Turning off a notification on your phone is still using your phone. I received the maximum discount on my first renewal.

If the app dishonesty dings someone, then it's the app's programing fault imo

The program isn't about safe driving as much as it's about distracted driving. It has it's gaps though like the bright screen mention. It also takes a few minutes to start and stop recording a trip since it's only using GPS data. I suppose they do it so every stop at an red light isn't triggering a end trip. Now your one drive turns into 5. Hands-free is still distracted driving. Your infractions shouldn't hit your score to hard if their only a few.

Before I went over to USAA I was with another insurance company that offer the same thing . they would contact me to let me know I had driven X amount of miles when I had not the speedometer show I was below what they were saying also I break hard .
It was a joke .

Stupid app. I need to keep my truck running so that I can keep my wi-fi active. I can be totally out of my vehicle using the wifi on my phone. But, this stupid app says that I am handling my phone while driving. So stupid!
