My second USAA insurance claim ends in nothing but DRAMA!!!

I had to cancel my policy with them because I was paying for a policy with them which in theory they wouldn’t cover me on. In 2017 I was in the service and was stationed in Louisiana and had a USAA auto policy, when I got out of the service I moved to CA and moved my home of record to CA and my policy did chance in price. In 2019 another car had rear ended me in a car I just purchased only 2 weeks before. I did not file a claim with USAA because I was not at fault but they still sent an investigator out to talk with me because I still had a Louisiana policy and that I was not eligible for a CA policy because of an accident my wife was involved in 2016. When I spoke with my agent I asked why I was not switched to a CA policy he had no answer. We pay these companies to put on commercials “we’ve got your back”!!

My rate has gone from $165/mo to $298/mo for two older vehicles in the past two years with no claims. I got stuck at work a few weeks ago, the water pump locked up and shreaded the belt. I had the parts in the truck because I was planning on replacing them the next day. Asked for a tow to my house. I sat in my freezing truck for four hours while tow company after tow company denied the tow. Finally a Marine Veteran got the call and actually drove an hour to pick up my truck and drive me 50 miles home. I'm sure my rate will go over $400 now.

Sadly, this is par for the course with every insurance company. I work with body shops across three states in the south, and I can tell you horror stories from every single one of them, whether it be from the shop's perspective, the policy holder's perspective, or my perspective. Insurance, as an industry, is outright racketeering, and the fact that there are still no enforceable regulations is nothing short of a travesty.

I'm sorry you've had such a bad experience. Filing and fulfilling a claim is a stressful nightmare. That truck, however, is worth whatever it takes to keep on the road! They're not entirely without issues, but they're cheap and easy to work on, parts are (for the most part) readily available, and they're incredibly reliable when cared for!

Wishing you all the best, thank you for taking the time to tell your story!

Damage from insects, vermin, and rodents is excluded in the USAA auto contract. I guess they figure that if you have rats in your car - you must have done something to attract them there. This vehicle was not made with soy-based plastic wiring so there must have been some food left inside the vehicle and it attracted a rodent. Most of the time this happens with vehicles left in a barn and the rodents find there way in there or you left you windows down / door open in an area with rodents. Either way, this isn't something the auto insurance contract is meant to cover. Auto insurance isn't designed to be a catch all for anything that happens to put your vehicle out of commission, especially wiring issues in a 20 year old vehicle. The cost of this repair would def be more than the vehicle is worth... so the best case scenario would have been for them to total it and sell it at auction then cut you a very small check. That claim would follow you for five years as well BUT since you called your insurance, that claim will be on your CLUE report and will show up to any company you switch to. Its a zero dollar payout so it isn't a "Chargeable claim" that will surcharge but it can prevent things like "claims free discount" as well as overall rating and you will pay a higher rate at renewal.

I can agree they shouldn't have given you a rental car until they knew the claim would be covered & the customer service could be better at explaining it but those are things all insurance companies need to work on. You get luck of the draw when calling any call center and it depends on how knowledgeable that rep is. How would you have responded in that moment if the first rep had told you that you were wasting your time since it wouldn't be covered? Would that have been any better of an experience? I get the sense you would have wanted to talk to a manager since the first rep "wasn't being helpful" in your mind but in reality a knowledgeable rep could have saved you alot of hassle.

Comprehensive is for weather damage, theft damage, or collision with an animal

Collision is for a collision with anything other than an animal

Anything outside of that is the owners responsibility. Just as you are responsible for changing the oil in your engine, you are required to keep pests away from your vehicle. We must take accountability for our day to day decisions and realize this was a very expensive mistake & learn from it so that it never happens to you or anyone you know again.

Best of luck chap

I had the same expierience with USAA. You just can't get ahold of the Mother fers. Then they lie and try to low ball the shops. They suck and they are

I just opened a usaa bank account because I wanted insurance with them as well. Thought I’d do everything in one spot. Glad I looked in to it before switching insurance. I know they used to be top notch. After talking with several friends in body and auto shops, I hear nothing good anymore.

every state have an insurance commission to deal with issues caused by any insurance company. Call them and file a complaint against USAA. IMO

Don’t know you and stumbled on your video. I had USAA for auto Insurance for 34 years. Back in my early years they were terrific. Never had an issue. Over the last couple of years they doubled my auto insurance. No reason given, no claims, no accidents, tickets etc. just said cause it’s where I live and I should move, mind you I’ve been where I live my whole life. We dropped them the next day. Bottom line is all insurance companies suck ass and not sure why USAA, who is a member owned company has got so bad, but all insurance company suck and need to be reformed. It’s BS! Sorry for your issues and hope you find some recourse.

Had my truck stolen while I had USAA. It was recovered, and they wanted to fix it at first. They took it from shop to copart and back to another shop before totaling it out. It took a total of 3 months just to get it totaled out. Another 2 months went by before they paid me, and they low balled the piss out of me. I tried to send them comparables to show them the truck was worth 50% more than what they offered, and they said because I used comparables from too far away, they couldn’t use them in their evaluation. But when I looked at their evaluation, they used ONLY comparables from out of state and shop quotes, all of which were out of date. Being from alaska, everything is more expensive up here, including vehicles, and with so little people, it’s impossible to find good comparables in the area unless you have an extremely common vehicle.

I was thinking of switching to USAA as I had been told it would be cheaper than Allstate. Thank-you. I can't say anything good about Allstate.
Any good suggestions out there, I welcome your comments.

USAA does suck, one of their clients backed in to me last year while I was driving my father n laws car and they took months to respond. His insurance co. had to threaten to fix his car and send them the bill. Also had to threaten to report them to my states insurance regulation board or whatever they called it. They get in a lot of trouble if your report them to the state and makes them look really bad. Dads had nationwide for over 50 years and I stayed with them since he died, but just recently it took them 3 months just to give me a quote on a house I wanted to buy.... My sisters had geico of for years and says they have been cheap and great service. I'm thinking of switching over cause NW is starting to dollar me to death every way they can, but have always took care of claims good, thats the main reason I've stayed as long as I have with them.

I have USAA and am grateful. 💯 seven years ago. I told my State Farm agent that I’m canceling. He asked “who are you going with“and I said USAA. He said good for you. I can’t touch their coverage. Good luck.

that's weird I have had USAA for 33 years and had two claims without an issue

disagree with your tale entirely on usaa. ive had two claims in the last year and a half, one car one home and it was a breeze. my car was totaled they gave me a 1000 dollar credit to pay for my rental car. when i went to buy a new car they told me to call them when i was ready to buy. found a car and called them they wired the money directly to the dealership in about 10 mins and the amount was more then fair market value for the car

home insurance claim. they gave me a check for 50k to fix the home which was more then my gc quoted to fix the damage. they also paid me my lost rent for every month the house was vacant for repairs

With all due respect:

I have to say that USAA IS BY FAR the best insurance company one can have. So much so, that If I could go back in time, I would have served 4 years to have them as My insurance company.

As a general Contractor ( residential…I can’t speak for auto), they are BY FAR the best In terms of rolling out the red carpet for those who have served.

You CANNOT go wrong with USAA.

This complaint is an anomaly.
