What has your experience with insulin been?

I LOVE how you explain the complicated world of changing our diets to control diabetes. I would love to see you do a post on LADA. I was recently diagnosed with this. And still learning do's and don'ts. I know this area is growing because of misdiagnosis.

I’m a type 1 diabetic and have PCOS. I’m definitely going to focus on my carb intake. Thank you so much for this info.

Thanks Kait! I am so glad you are discussing this! Sooo important! The insulin injections are making my neighbors dog store a huge fatty tumor on her side. Veterinarians for the most part don't understand insulin resistance. Most pets that become diabetic are type 2, from a crappy carbohydrate filled diet and constant eating.

Hi Kait, I am a Type 2 Diabetic and have been on insulin for years, 84 units per day total.I take one injection upon arising, and the other half I take before dinner.I also take a once weekly injection .My last A1C was 6.6 and the doctor told me to continue this regimen, she did like my test results.

So glad to hear someone else say this. I have wondered the same since I first learned about insulin resistance 20+ years ago. If the body cant use the insulin to it's fullest as it is why add more? In May of this year I was in the hospital for Cellulitis on my right shin, my BG was 410 and my A1C was 13.7. In August my A1C was 6.5 with a fasting BG of 124. Since then I have struggled to get my fasting BG to go any lower on 25 units of Insulin and 1000mg of Metformin twice a day since August and 2 weeks ago noticed that the insulin was **NOT** lowering my daily BG levels right before dinner at all. I ran out and my BG was running about the same as it was when I was taking the insulin. I have also been slowly gaining weight since I got out of the hospital, where I lost 20 lbs due to a forced fast due to the stupid hospital food. I also found if I dont have any carbs at all during the day my BG is a little higher, and have heard an endocrinologist explain why, it is a similar thing to what happens when we sleep, and the liver produces more glucose to make up for what we dont eat. This doc has actually had patients who came in with T2 Diabeties and were on a zero carb diet.

I have type2 diabetes & noticed, since being diagnosed, that I've had to increase my long-term & short term insulin dosage a lot & blood sugars still are high, unless I don't eat. The only thing that has brought my blood sugar down is not eating anything. The low carb diet didn't work, glipizide didn't work & metformin didn't work. I gained over 50 lbs since being on insulin too. I recently went to a weight loss doctor & she put me on Jardiance & magically my blood sugar, appetite & weight is down & I've only been on it a week. I'm anxious to see how it continues to do. I'm very happy so far that FINALLY something is working to lower my blood sugar & weight. It feels really good to have to force myself to eat a little something every day. I started at 272 & now 260. My blood sugar in the am is now 140-150s & before Jardiance it was 250-270s every morning or higher. I had given up hope until I met my new weight loss doctor & she said to me, "It's not your fault, I'm going to help you". I literally cried & the Jardiance is working!

For weight and waist circumference maintenance the biggest change I've made is not WHAT I eat but how OFTEN.

I still eat processed and carb rich food BUT doing so once every other day has stabilized my BMI. And when I do have that one meal I get to eat as much as my heart desires.

I do keto for weight loss.

I've been a type 2 since 1993. My doctor knows that I now follow a carnivore diet with 16/8 IF. She's okay with it, but I have to keep taking my insulin, and she feels that such a diet is not sustainable. The change to carnivore has resulted in having to use less insulin and some weight loss-8, 5 lbs. in two months. What is frustrating is that neither my GP nor my endo will do a fasting insulin.

When I was first diagnosed with T2D, I did what I was told by taking insulin injections, Later, I asked my primary care doctor, if my body is producing an excess amount of insulin, how is injecting more going to help me? Her reply was that she felt we could work on getting me off the insulin. Today, using LCHF and no strenuous exercise, I'm off all the diabetic medicines with an A1c of 5.3%.

I have IR and take Wegovy injections one a week. Am I correct that you are not talking about this shot here. I also do Intermittent Fasting 18/6 and eat less than 20 grams of carbs a day. If I have only 30 grams a day of carbs I gain weight. How do these people do around 100 as you wrote?

This should be taken with a grain of salt. First this person is not a medical professional nor a person that actually has studied human biology. The benefit of exogenous insulin in T2D is great and cannot simply be reduced to just contributor to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance needs to be worked on alongside medication and long term lifestyle changes. Also, the pancreas burns out and no longer can produce insulin making a T2D more like a T1D. That being said most people will agree with her statements because it tells them they don’t need it. It’s like a seat belt, you can drive without it but it’s a good thing to have in the event you crash.
