Does your 2024 iPad Pro M4 tandem OLED display look "grainy"? What causes it, why should we care (or not), and is the graininess a deal-breaker for me? 🧐

Ya I didn’t notice it until I saw a Reddit post about it. Then I checked in a dim room dim display zoomed in really close and then I could see it. This will not be your normal viewing experience so I will not be returning it

I own lots of OLEDs and this is just a weakness of OLEDs at low brightness. The evenness of dim grays is one of the few strengths of LCDs, but OLEDs are still overall superior.

I also have on mine. I’m convinced most panels with have this and the people who say they don’t have it did not look closely enough. Not sure if I want to return mine I will check the models in store and compare them.

At last someone is talking about this, thanks.

They should have upped the PPI to compensate for this just like they did when they went to OLED on iPhones. They went from 401 PPI to 458.

I’m returning mine. I’m getting eye strain when I read too much on it. Video looks amazing but I don’t only use my iPad as a portable TV.

I am telling myself that my new iPad doesn’t have this and refusing to check because I know it will drive me crazy the second I see it 😂

I saw it when I went to best buy to check out the review model. I was like dang it almost look worse than my M2 that I didnt have with me. I was soooo confused because I was super excited about seeing the new screen

The only OLED panel I have ever seen grain as depicted on the M4 iPad Pro is from the 2020 Motorola Edge Plus. That phone used a cheap quality off brand OLED panel designed by Samsung but is officially manufactured by Ygpmoiki in Taiwan. I wonder if this is the same situation of the OLED panel in the iPad 🤔.

i have pretty bad vision and even i noticed the grain right away, was watching a movie in a dark room, brightness all the way down and images were really grainy, and on top of that, the images were kinda flickering constantly, i don't know what thats all about, i returned it next day

Yah i saw this in reddit. That guy was insanely shouting about it lol. But if the only way to see the grainy issue is thru a dark environment in 25% brightness then its not an issue for me lol. Thank you so much for clarifying.

I also own lots of oleds. It‘s not a Samsung-issue, it‘s a technology-issue. My LG Oled TV has it, my Tab S9 Plus has it, my iPhone 15 Pro has it, my Steam Deck Oled has it and I can even see it on my Apple Watch S9 if I look closely. Yes, some of those displays are provided by Samsung. However, I remember it was super irritating on my LG V30 back in the days, but tech has evolved since then. I also notice it on both of my portable INNOCN Oled monitors, which have displays supplied by BOE.
It is NOT limited to Samsung. It‘s a technology shortcoming that I would take 10 out of 10 times since I absolutely hate displays with backlight.
Haven‘t seen the M4 iPads in person, but since I‘m sensitive to it, I‘m sure I‘d notice it right away. It has never bothered me too much, though. Low res Oleds with pentile or diamond matrix were super terrible for me, but the grainy greys on high res oleds are absolutely acceptable for me.

What about someone with light sensitivity that uses the screen on like the lowest brightness setting you van, literally, or sometimes has assimilate features to lower it further? This is concerning to me cause I’m one of those people, I wanted to watch dark movies scenes on it

I don’t have that problem. I checked even with magnifying glasses.

I only see it on images that are not completely black and you really have to focus and look for it. It’s nitpicking

So it's a flaw and shouldn't be release on a final product then eh

I have the same problem. I was shocked when i first looked at the screen after unpacking. Still can't get used to it. You don't expect Apple's latest device for a lot of money to look like this

Hi Ben have you experienced smearing like having white text on black background + eye care on and when you scroll the white text flickers and turns to red until you stop i have this on tab s9😢

Some advice, I reckon if you were to buy a new iPad, the M2 iPad Air is perhaps the more suited choice because of this, but if you desperately need the 120Hz ProMotion display and the best cameras, and best RAM (8GB for 256/512GB, 16GB for 1TB+), the M2 iPad Pro is perfect.

If the grainy display in the M4 iPad Pro really is a hardware problem and something that can’t be addressed in a software update, maybe Apple might recall this hyped OLED iPad? Certainly could be possible, if enough people complain about this display issue.

Despite the hype around the OLED display, the M4 iPad Pro probably might not be perfect, unless you want a grainy display. That’s not to say you shouldn’t buy it, because some folks might really need that heavy amount of power (M4, 16GB RAM, 1TB+), and they probably just wouldn’t even care about the small detail. Even then, there are some users who don’t even notice this issue on their devices, no matter how hard they try to spot the grainy display. Fortunately, my OLED iPhone does not have this issue.
