MicroNugget: What are the Different FC Port Types?

In this video, Anthony Sequeira covers Fibre Channel port types. Any time you're planning to learn storage architectures or storage technologies, you should be prepared for a whole new vocabulary. FC can be especially challenging, which is why Anthony explains one sizable portion of it here.

Fibre Channel is the protocol and set of interfaces, devices and specifications that can build storage area networks. In FC, the ports on various devices are identified with very specific names and specific identifiers. The vocabulary and significance of all those names can confuse and annoy students.

In this video, Anthony covers the names and identifiers of FC ports. The content of this video is taken from CBT Nuggets' CompTIA Storage+ series.

There are nine FC port types to know (named things like N_, to NL_, or G_, for example). Each corresponds to a common name. (Node port, Node Loop port, or Generic port, to use the same example.)  The key is tying them all together. So, for example, an N_port is a Node port and it's used by an End Device.
