First, Linux distributions are to Linux as different makes and models are to cars: different approaches — and usually not interchangeable — to accomplishing the same end. Be ready for package management, which other OSs don't tend to have. Operating GUIs make visualization easier. Try Linux out by booting from a live CD or live USB so you don't have to touch your hard drive — or even better, try a virtual machine. But most important of all is look for opportunities to learn about Linux's operation.

To Nº 4, I got into the world of linux with red hat (no gui) on servers at work a couple of years ago and soon became amused by the power, flexibility and countless possiblities of getting things done. Later on I got fed up with win on my own machines, and decided to try ubuntu, its nice and all for the family and friends that are used to win, but nothing beats the console, it's one hell of a time saver for me!
