As dawn approached Friday morning, many around Tampa Bay awaited help as search and rescue teams worked to pull people from water-logged homes.

The storm unleashed record storm surge, with communities from the beaches to St. Petersburg’s Shore Acres neighborhood inundated with flood water. Officials closed access to Clearwater Beach overnight. By early Friday morning, nearly 1 million Floridians were without power.

Across St. Petersburg people repeated the same refrain: They’d never seen water so high.

Residents of Florida’s Big Bend region confronted a near-midnight landfall of the Category 4 storm late Thursday. For much of the night, tropical storm warnings were in effect from the Florida Keys to the Panhandle.

I live NE of Tampa and will be moving out of FL next spring! Vastly overrated place to live- sky high cost of living, worst traffic and weather.
