Tropical storm Helene leaves trail of destruction across Georgia: “Did not expect this bad”

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp warned residents on Friday not to wander out of their homes if it wasn't necessary, after Hurricane Helene caused widespread destruction and flooding through Florida and Georgia overnight. Helene came ashore in Florida and weakened to a tropical storm as it moved into Georgia, killing multiple people and leaving more than 4 million homes and businesses without power.

Atlanta residents surveyed the damage in the aftermath of the storm’s wake, which left a chaotic landscape of overturned boats in harbours, felled trees, submerged cars and flooded streets across Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.

“Well, I expected it to be bad,” Georgian resident Dayla Jackson said. “But I did not expect this bad. But we didn’t hear anything inside of our condo. We didn’t hear anything at all except for the wind moving, but it didn’t sound like it was raining that hard.”

The U.S. National Hurricane Center forecast the remnants of Helene, now a tropical storm, would move from the Georgia-South Carolina border to Tennessee and Kentucky over the weekend.

Augusta GA has no food, no gas, no Internet, no wifi. No response team, no power. We see no resources on the ground. The community is helping one another because the people who are paid and elected to do their job in this situation has no plans in place. Middle class neighborhood is getting responses, help, & resources

Yeah nobody can help their own family cause you’re making them do their normal jobs and not providing any type of assistance once again it’s mass chaos & everyone just doing their own thing no order whatsoever this has been ridiculous.

State officials should have provided sandbags and barriers to divert the water from populated areas. Furthermore, levees need to be in place along all rivers and creeks to prevent flooding into populated areas/communities.
