SS#, DOB, references - there is no reason for them to need any of these at that point.

DOB = age discrimination,
References = they are mining for contacts (especially if they are a staffing agency - they use it to contact them to sell their services).
SS# - they can steal your Identity

Fun fact: Social Security was originally not meant to be used as a form of ID. Pre-70s cards even have that disclaimer printed on it.

Damn, there’s no way that doesn’t violate some privacy laws, right? Right?!

When I was unemployed and desperate(early 2024), many fast-food places asked for my social security number on their online application. I noticed when I refused, the application would not submit. Also weird thing? Taco Bell got sued over this and made it optional. I filled out one of their applications and it wasn't optional. Overall, I'd be annoyed if Shake Shack, Taco Bell, etc sold my info.

Yes absolutely, I've had job scam attempts on me and they asked for my social insurance number in the FIRST email!

Background check I was advised never to put down my Drivers license no. or my Social.

I'll also say it depends on the state. Here in NY (no surprise there) you have to put your social for the Tax Credit section (and answer questions like if anyone in your immediate family is receiving social assistance and etc). It's not a part of all apps but it is mandatory to fill out or else you can't apply. It's called WOTC, and yes I hate it with a passion. I don't like putting my social security on any job related documents unless it's a W4 or I9 and even then, you know you got the job at that point.

I sucks because if it's a job with a government security clearance they have to have it to check your clearance.

Shows I haven't done this in a while, but literally every application you filled out at a retail store, restaurant, etc required it. Do they not anymore?

Many Indian recruiters be asking for DOB and SS# at the application and recruitment level! 😬😏😠

I’m 48 years old. I have put my SS# on literally every job application I’ve ever filled out. 🤷‍♂️

I’m not a job hopper either. Most have been careers and long term positions.

I live in Ohio. Everyone requires your ssn on applications. Especially for financial or government sector jobs. How to get around it?

I get asked by the recruiter for verifying my clearance with the FSO. Sometimes its before or after an interview.

Wait so what do you do if you've sent your SSN for a job app already??

I was told I was hired with an online teaching company (2 years ago). I received a schedule and everything. I provided information for direct deposit. It was a scam. Luckily my bank contacted me before this scamployer tried to withdraw my money. I had a lot of worries about identity theft after this experience too.

Sometimes before the first interview, if you are applying to jobs in defense and it requires a clearance, they will call you and ask for your social security number over the phone to verify your clearance before they interview you. Has happened to me a few times in my last job search.

if the employer ain't .gov they don't get to know my ssn.

BIG red flag. Unless hired, my SS# is not required.

I've only seen this for state jobs in California
