Why I don't use PaperLike iPad Screen Protector Anymore

Here is my honest review about the screen protector PaperLike 2.
I made a review video about PaperLike 1 and you can see it here:

I also made a video about using Pen Tips on PaperLike 2:

The things I like about PaperLike is that it has a matt look. When looking at it it has a lot less glare. But after drawing and painting on it, the screen protector has a lot of wear. You can see the marks you have made on the iPad. I followed their advice to clean PaperLike with a damp cloth. But that does not remove the marks on the surface and it does not improve the PaperLike feel.

Paperlike 2 has improved the glare of the NanoDots by making the dots smaller. But they have sacrificed the Paper Like feel for that. To me there is almost no difference to drawing with or without PaperLike 2. After painting on it my Apple Pencil tip had worn down by the friction. PaperLike 2 costs $ 39,95 or € 34. To me that is a waste of money. So I would not recommend using PaperLike 2

I love using the Moshi matte protector, no scratches, no pencil tip wear and you can remove it to wash and re-apply over and over

Yeah, I replaced my pencil nip before I realised it was my Paperlike screen protector that was wearing it down. I’m not heavy on my iPad and was surprised that it could do this. Great information. Thanks…

Your observations are exactly like my experience with paperlike. Like you, I have both models used on two iPads with two pencils. The experience is completely different from the original model. Even the sound it made on the original paperlike was satisfying and the friction was more like ‘real paper’. I hope they can get this figured out on the next gen. Thanks!

Thanks for that. I prefer to just become accustomed to the feel of the Apple Pencil on glass.

I really loved my original Paperlike that I had years ago. It lasted for AGES. But when I got the iPad Pro 2020 and got the new Paperlike, it was scratched up the first day I used it! I also could never get all the air bubbles out. But when I got off-brand matte screen protectors, the bubbles came out fine and after several months (around a year, actually) no scratches. It’s starting to get a few spots around the edges that aren’t adhering to the iPad screen as much anymore, but I barely notice it unless I’m looking. It was a 2-pack like Paperlike, but half the price, so I still have one left.

Try using letter sized clear acetate or view foils ( for those old enough to remember), it works really well and is dirt cheap. I just tape it on near the top and the clear material gives you just enough tooth for a realistic drawing feedback. The material is perfectly clear and does not leave a residue on your ipad screen. You can easily replace the vinyl or acetate since it is not stuck on. I have experimented with several materials with different feedback feel … just dig in your old art drawer and see what you can find ……….

I'm pretty sure any screen protector with with tooth to it is going to wear away at the pencil. The smoother the surface, the less tooth, and less friction to wear away at the pencil nib.

Thanks for the honest feedback!
I thought I was the only one with this experience.
I’ll be keeping mine on as I can tell the difference between drawing with it on and without it.
I just miss the paper sound and feel.
I do appreciate that it’s less ‘blurry’ then the first one.

Thank you so much for the honest review and puttting your viewers on top than what they offered! Truly appreciated

you can get magnetic attached screen layer for drawing, and simply remove it once you are finished.

Hi. I bought my iPad mini after a long time of not owning any tablets and bought paper-like after seeing good reviews on it. I like how it stops glare in the screen but I hate how it makes it hard for the ipad to sense my fingers and prevents me from swiping, and zooming in or out when using the Sketchbook app

I recently bought the new M1 iPad Pro 12.9 inches and also Paperlike 2. I can't say anything about wear on the tip or anything like that because I've only had it for 3 weeks. However, I immediately noticed that the paperlike creates an extreme rainbow effect. I think that Paperlike 2 is not really mature in combination with the new display, so I would definitely advise against this combination as it makes the new display almost completely redundant.

P.s. Thank you for your honest and authentic review, I discovered you through this video and will definitely check out the others too.

Nice honest review. Do have any suggestions for other good "paper like" screen protectors, which give you the feel of drawing on paper on not wearing down the tip so fast?

I noticed that the colors are different with the paperlike screen protector especially with the iPad Pro 2021. Also, you are absolutely right the texture from the paperlike 1 to Paperlike 2 is completely different. Paperlike 2 almost feels like a plastic wax surface.

I just purchased an IPad Pro 4th Gen 12.9 inch, along with PaperLike 2. After watching your video, I'm a little nervous, because your review was with the most recent IPad Pro (correct me if I'm wrong). Nevertheless, I'm gonna apply it and see if any of your points are obvious. I too have enjoyed PaperLIke 1 on both my IPad Pros (11 & 12.9 3rd Gen). It's the reason why I immediately purchased it for my new tablet.

Thanks for this truly honest review. It was very well thought out and presented. By the way, I am a Writer & Copy Editor, so much of what I do deals with writing.

Thanks for the review. I have never used a Paperlike but I have another type of matte screen protector on my iPad and I would not use the Apple Pencil without it. Writing or drawing on the glass screen feels horrible. I considered getting a Paperlike when I got the iPad but almost every tech YouTube seemed to be sponsored by Paperlike and I didn't really trust any of the "reviews" out there so I skipped it. An example perhaps of a companies aggressive marketing backfiring if only in the case of one potential customer.

Another great and honest review. So tired of fake reviews for affiliate money. Having viewed about 2 other reviews of paperlike they all said the same as you. That it creates massive scratches. I don't think any product will be able to not do this as they are creating friction and think of what happens when you run your nail over sandpaper. You see marks. Nothing can prevent that. Its glass ( no scratches ) or matte (scratches)

You should check out magnetic screen protectors.. I think this is the ultimate solution because we can finally just use it when we want and then take it off
