When I was a kiddo my family moved into the house my grandmother lived in when she passed away. She had a massive veggie garden in her backyard that included a large patch of asparagus. Her asparagus was very well established (probably talking 5-8 years). We would harvest for something like a whole month from when they started sending up shoots; new ones would appear almost daily and they grow so fast they'd start sprouting if you didn't check at least every other day! After around a month my dad would say no more harvesting and we'd let them turn into giant bushes. That seemed to work as we got a huge crop of asparagus every year for at least another 6-8 years. :) I can't wait to have the roots put down that will let me start a patch of my own.

Luke, I'm so glad you got into the seed business. Thanks for your generous heart.

I started with 10 crowns and the birds spread the seed for me. I now have 45 crowns in two beds and 'wild' asparagus all over the garden

I purchased some Asparagus seedling like you planted in the video. I searched everywhere to find out how to plant them. Nothing could be found anywhere. Everywhere I looked, they wanted to show me how to plant crowns. Without knowing I was doing it correctly, I planted them just like you showed in this video. That was several weeks ago. We thought 1 had died but it has green shoots coming out of it. All 12 plants are doing awesome and they have even spread out just a little. I'm looking forward to have Asparagus for dinner right out of my own garden.

This was extremely informative. I bought my first home this past November and found evidence of asparagus in the backyard.  I had a bumper crop already and this video was a great affirmation as I let a lot of the newer looking aparagus stay put. There are so many ferns now that next spring should be VERY exciting.  Thank you for this video.  You taught me a lot!

I've watched this a couple years back and learned a lot from you even though I live in San Diego and decided to revert back to this to make sure I'm still following your advice and I must be as I've had my Asparagus going now for over Ten years and the last couple have been bumper crops. The first 5 years I would only take a hand full and let the rest of the shoots just flourish. I'd cut them down in late November to early December and leave the area alone and just put some of my own compost over the rhizome area and keep letting it just go to it furn state other than cutting a very few. I've also learned that when you cut the shoots it forces the plant to pop out more shoots which in turn I just let them go to full term of their life. It's worked great and have already harvested a couple dozen shoots a week ago (of course I also let a few just go) and have 14 more I'm just about ready to cut and will leave an additional half dozen to just keep growing. You have a great growing information channel and have used a lot of your information to grow some great veggies I just slightly modify some information to match my location and the Epic Gardner is just right up the road from me (15 minutes) and use his advice all the time. Between yours and his knowledge there is no way a person could ever go hungry. Thanks again for keeping all of this knowledge available even though it's been years since you posted this.

Just planted my asparagus this spring.... and the waiting game begins! Lots of extremely slender, foot tall ferns this year. I just keep weeding the bed, watching, and waiting. The first harvest (2020?) will be well appreciated!

I had never tried asparagus because I heard that it was difficult to grow. After watching, I'm going to try it this year. I am going to use containers, but they'll be in a green house during the winter. Thanks for another great video.

Asparagus is lovely.  You are right about how long it can grow.  I visited the home where Ruth Stout lived.  You may have heard of her, she was a gardening writer in the 60's.  Her inspiration for her gardening technique, Straw Bale Gardening, was from growing asparagus. She passed away, in 1980.  In 2011,  visited her home and garden. Her asparagus was still growing!

Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video for us. It can be a confusing topic and you've explained it very well in a way that's easy to understand.

Great video! Thanks for posting. I hunt for wild asparagus. Once you find patches, you can return every year for more. Plus, you don't need to assign garden space for it.

I was happy to find this! We ordered the Mary Washington asparagus seed from you and I wasn't sure how to transplant it into the bed because most videos use crowns. My seedlings look just like yours. Thanks :)

@MIGardener I know this is an older video of yours, but it's one of my favorites. You were very succinct. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'll hopefully be planting my new rhizomes soon!
