I was told a long time ago that you shouldn’t harvest asparagus before a hard freeze if the plant is still producing roots. They say the plant will pull back nutrients from new growth when it senses a freeze and will actually feed the roots while the temperatures are falling. The same way fruit trees do when going into dormancy. If you prune a fruit tree before fall it won’t send as much energy back into the roots and the tree won’t be as vigorous. This can be good when training fruit trees but bad for establishing asparagus.

My ferns came up but they get too long and wither and die

I started seeds and ended up in big pots around July...In February of following year after many 20 degree nights, I harvested the crowns, very healthy crowns after being exposed to very frozen nights. Also, every year I plan to start a new crop from seed so I can have them for life

I live in Zone 2 and my Jersey giant roots have come back each year for 22 years. The purple asparagus roots did not survive. We do have dependable snow cover by mid October. A local farmer put a thermometer in the ground and found that after 18 inches of undisturbed snow cover the ground temperature stabilizes at about 10 degrees Fahrenheit even with 40 below air temperature (and not using a raised bed).

I have asparagus starts growing from seed this year, started them in February. will be planting them out when it warms up. Then I'll have to wait 3 years to harvest any because I grew mine from 'seeds' and not the pre-started crowns .

Last year I got over 100 seeds from my asparagus ferns. I germinated them all in paper towels..I had a grow bag, a big black one so I put all of the seedlings on top and covered with dirt, watered and put a blanket over them. It's gonna be 37 degrees tonight....do you think they will die? The grow bag is black so I'm hoping it generated enough heat throughout the day. I hope they don't die they are just sprouting

What about waiting times after transplanting the crowns?
Back story: We purchased four two year old crowns planted them in a container that was to small two years ago. So they are now four years old. But, we had to transplant them into different containers this winter because their roots had gotten root locked do to the small container. Any advice or tips would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I lost a few of mine because I didn't start them early enough! (I live in northern BC) The 1 that made it is actually planted 18" deep AND I can also plant things on top! This is tear 3 & it's starting to go crazy!

I had one asparagus that was about 10 inches high. The freeze got it. Now they are starting to come up in full.

I never even knew that I needed to be careful about this. Thank you. I wonder if this is the reason that I have a big gap, I bet I lost a patch in the middle to a late freeze.

I think it's not the best but okay to harvest a spear from a crown after 5 spears have been left to fern out? That's what I did the first year I planted I think 2yr old crowns. I only lost one female that I cut down early and 2 of 3 that were planted kinda shallow in a raised row and they got blown over and some ferns cut down early. So I lost 3 out of 25. I planted my purple crowns in 3 different areas/ways. I learned I should have potted them till I could identify all the females and then do a final planting of an all male row and maybe an expendable experimental female intercropping bed. also seems that any shade causes them to grow crooked, so full sun no shadows from anything taller than a foot although dill did work okay for me, also learned that companion plants for Asparagus are Parsley Basil and Tomato and to plant in about a 12 inch deep hole or trench on top of about a 2 inch mound of sand and compost with some slow release organic fertilizer. I planted Everbearing Strawberries with mine and they seem great together but later found out they can share diseases with heirloom tomato plants, so I must grow hybrids or have root stock grafted and or must keep cut back and water in a way to avoid leaf moisture/disease. Hope my experiments help someone have the perfect first time experience and are blessed with healthy asparagus for life.

I bought and planted 2yr crowns but only a few came up and I was hit with grass hoppers. Do you think I'll need to replant?
