I will soon be 70 years old and I have been growing vegetables my whole life with my family and I've never grown asparagus. And I've been thinking about this a lot and wanting to do it. I would love a video about how to start

I’m 37 and today is the first time in my life I’ve ever seen an asparagus plant.

When you mentioned noticing seed heads, you were holding a spear. The seeds don't come from the spear tips, the seeds come from female asparagus plants. They grow small seed pods on the fern part of the female plants. The male plants have flowers too, and sometimes have the berries or seed pods, but not often. Most people only grow the male plants because they have larger spears because they spend less energy on producing seeds. The male flowers have orange/yellow inside and the female plants have flowers with green inside. That green turns into the seed pod that will turn red as they ripen.

We always stripped berries from stalks because plants will spend all it's energy making seeds, not storing food. We had a market garden. Asparagus was easy. Planted it with plenty of rotted cow manure in the trench, covered with good soil and a thick mulch. Every fall, the tops were cut and hauled away (because of a chance of pests). 6 inches of manure covered the bed and mulch. The bed was a very heavy producer. One woman I know would put down thick mulch after she stopped cutting and 'planted' mushroom spore in the straw.

Now that's a best, clear and simple explanation 🤗.

Can you talk more about this? I’ve also never grown asparagus and honestly don’t know where to start. Can you just buy seeds, when to plant, etc?

I love your channel! I’m new to gardening and just followed. Can you go over growing zones in a video? ❤️

I'm grateful for all tips. I have an asparagus patch that's probably 25 years old, maybe older. It still produces, but not as much as it used to. It's enough for one person, though, so I haven't made any changes. What should I do next?

I can’t remember where I’ve seen you from before, was probably a few years back, were you with Kin Community? I do remember enjoying your videos and such a pleasant surprise to find you with your own channel!

How do you "pick it"?? Pull up the plant from roots or cut it off the plant?

Is this it’s first year. I’ve never grown it myself. Would like to attempt it this year.
