How to Plant and Grow Asparagus from Asparagus Crowns

Asparagus is a perennial vegetable and makes a valuable addition to the garden. To plant asparagus, choose a variety you like such as Jersey Giant or Mary Washington. Asparagus grows for 20 years, so choose an area very carefully to plant Asparagus. Choose an area that receives full sun and has well drained soil. Add compost to add organic matter into the soil. Compost loosens the soil and also helps to retain moisture in the soil as well. Asparagus likes alkaline soil with pH around 7.0, so add wood ash to make the soil more alkaline and wood ash also ads potassium and phosphorus to the soil as well. To start planting, first soak Asparagus roots in water for 1 hour, dig trenches to plant Asparagus. Trench should be at least 6 in deep and 12 in wide. Plant spacing for Asparagus is 18 in apart and row spacing is 3 to 4 feet apart. Plant asparagus in trenches while fanning the roots in al directions and keeping the crown raised and straight up. Cover with most, water to make the soil moist and cover with mulch to suppress weeds and retain moisture. Do not harvest any asparagus the first year, you can start harvesting some asparagus shoots in second year and by third year, asparagus will product shoots for regular harvest.
