I grew a giant asparagus...

It's been three years since we planted our asparagus patch, which is about the amount of time it takes for a patch to establish... and establish it did.

We've never seen a stalk this tall, easily over 24" in length. Usually they get woody at the bottom at this point, but after cooking it up it ended up delicious!

A pro tip on harvesting asparagus: if you snap it off by bending it, it usually snaps off right at the part where it's starting to get woody, leaving the less edible parts behind.

Asparagus grows like it’s trying to trick someone into believing that that is how asparagus grows

As a farmer, I do agree that asparagus is insane fresh

I live in Michigan. Those babies grow wild in the spring all over the place. I pick them. They are so yummy and tasty.

Wild asparagus so much better than store bought. I've picked it much larger in height and diameter. The bigger ones of an inch diameter comes after a good rain later in the season. Asparagus loves ditches, canals. Water and manure

This is just regular healthy aparagus. I can pick 2-3 pounds of asparagus this size on my farm daily if we have decent moisture

Duuuude! You should have let it seed out and saved them. You would have had a new strain to sell after a few years of selective breeding

The bigger asparagus gets, the tougher and woodier it gets. My old employer used to have a decent sized garden with an asparagus patch she's had for years and years, one of the stalks was as thick as my wrist

It blew my mind when no one ate the asparagus head first. My mom grew it in her garden for years and we wouldn't eat a stalk without the head until we were adults

"It's so big" and "you converted me" got me 😂

All asparagus get that big, but generally you don’t eat them when they do, tend to be very tough and woody

For anyone wondering, this is not some freak of nature. Asparagus can grow to be like 6ft tall and 2ft in diameter

“Dude it’s so big”
You can’t convince me no one thought something dirty when he said that

Asparagus can basically go feral like that - my grandparents had a stalk from when they tried growing some grow nearly four feet. Thing was it wasn't even growing in the garden but next to it. Usually it's not recommended to eat them when they get that big because they get kinda woody (ie unpleasant to eat) but I'm glad this one cooked up nicely.

I love the fact that asparagus grows like someone is trying to trick their friends into thinking that’s how it grows

It's so much fun to see the asparagus in the morning, then to see how much it's grown in just a single day!

You can use a potato peeler towards the bottom of the asparagus and it’ll be less woody and you won’t have to throw it away either

speaking from experience, how you do cooked veggies is a world of difference between 'ugh gross' and 'this is so good, I want more'

I love asparagus! Asparagus is the very first vegetable to grow in Spring. Asparagus is packed with vitamins and minerals that restores the body after being depleted during the Winter. Interesting stuff how Mother Nature works.

If you boil asparagus in milk with some bouillon, then blend and strain it, you will have an amazing creme of asparagus soup
