Fat-shaming doctors? Yes, it happens. Not only is it sad, but it can actually be harmful to the health of patients. I discussed why on the Dr. Oz Show. Take a peek- and think hard about your doctor. They should uplift, motivate and encourage you- not the opposite.

Thanks a bunch, and see you soon!

at my local Veterans hospital. I went for a check up in order to update my diabetis medication. I am 5, 4. and weighed 146 at the time with intentions of getting down to 130. I was fat shamed by my doctor to loose "at least 50 pounds" that would have put me under weight. this is the same doctor that told me that I was "chubby" I was wearing a size zero pants so I took them off and threw them at him.

I saw this live on the Dr. Oz show and happy to see you, Dr. Jen. Doctors need to treat patients as customers and deliver world class customer service to them. Not shame them.

This is why I weigh myself at home on my scales and give them the weight at the clinic because there is no privacy. I like what you said Dr. Caudle, "trust your guts".Several years ago I had been feeling sick for months and finally I went to my family physician for a diagnosis. My gut told me that she was attributing my symptoms to my weight . The physician kept reminding me that I had high blood pressure and that maybe my medicine needed adjusting. My blood pressure was fine and blood work didn't reveal anything. I finally got angry and spoke up. I said, " I might be an overweight female, but I know my body and something is wrong." She finally listened and referred me to an allergy clinic. After testing, it revealed that I was allergic to ragweed and dust. I had to take allergy shots for two and a half years. At that point I decided to change clinics because I felt let down. At my new clinic I finally had a doctor that listened. What a relief to have someone that I felt comfortable with and that respected and listened to me. He made me feel safe again with physicians. Years later I had the same symptoms and this doctor immediately referred me to my allergy clinic. I was diagnosed with asthma and was allergic to cats this time. Same as before I had to take allergy shots. Lastly, I respect doctors, but please listen to your patients. Do not stereotype people. Thank you Dr. Caudle and Dr. Oz for bringing attention to this issue. Also, I have since lost weight, but I still have asthma and allergies.

I'm almost 100% positive my sister has Cushing's disease. She has been to 3 doctors and NO one will help her. She is to the point she doesnt want to live anymore. There is one specialist that will test for it in LA but cant afford the $300 for the 30 min skype consultation.

I agree docs need to be tactful the way they approach overweight patients. I’m not overweight, but I know how easy it is to put on weight, especially as I’m older and have back issues. It’s hard to walk sometimes, let alone do vigorous aerobics.

I worked for a doctor who fat shamed everyone who came through his office. People would be so apprehensive getting their weight taken. They could come in with a sinus infection and his notes would read in about her weight." He was sick and obsessed. He was also abusing Viagra, testosterone and other drugs, watching porno night and day on his computer, and was saying sexually inappropriate things to women and young girls. I reported him to the medical board and the DEA searched his office. He lost his license. He pointed fingers others when he should have taken a good long look at himself.
Any doctor who doesn't respect or listen to what the patients are reporting, and who talks over them and forces their own agenda, one should be suspicious right away.

The “gut trust “ can sometimes deceive based upon you reception to change and respect of authority and insecurity. You have the eyes smile and are an efficient listener and have a trusting face Dr Jen..this is an excellent session for discussions! Love this one Dr Jen you are the best!

I had Cushing’s Syndrome and dismissed and fat shamed for 3+ years. They removed a rare adrenal tumor and waited for me to get better. I gained more weight. Then the cycle of fat shaming & judgement continued. Then was diagnosed with Dercum’s Disease which is very rare adipose disorder. In between that, was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, MCAS, Severe OSA, Gilbert's Syndrome, etc... In any case I’ve lost and gained 100 pounds twice. The medical community needs to be more compassionate and keep helping their patients vs. blaming it all on them! Please do your jobs and stop taking the easy way out.

Thanks Dr. Jen I saw this show!! As a nurse I even ask why are scales in the hallway?? If more doctors had some manners and just assume the patient just eats and fat shames and they're obese themselves what nerves!! Thanks wish you and Doctor Oz were my physicians!! But this Southern California nurse where earthquakes happen within days is her own advocate and the patients as well!! Love you Dr Jen and enjoy rest of week !! Much love and God bless all🌷❤️😁😉😘😍👼🏾🙇🏽‍♂️🙇🏽‍♀️🙏🏾

I was 7 months pregnant and constantly getting lightheaded. I went to the doctors and he comes in going “ ok let’s have a look. Let’s see how much of this is baby or moms pizza from last night”
I was so shocked I just left and got a new doctor.
The sad thing is that if a doctor was really concerned about a patients health they would know that a large majority of patients are overweight because of mental health issues or because of health issues🤷🏻‍♀️
If you ask most overweight people this has happened to them more than once😔

No. It’s fat shaming. If you have a physical difficulty, please don’t assume a good old fat shaming will help. It’s discrimination.

My ❤ goes out to the woman diagnosed with the brain tumor. Her doctor should have been sued.

This is not fat shaming, its literally facts. Shame on these people for playing victim so hard.

I do think though that overweight folks get too defensive no matter how you explain to them the health benefits of losing weight.. There is a fine line with shaming and giving facts...
