I explain how MCT oil could help improve your sleep

I had an idea to try MCT oil before my bedtime to see if it helped me sleep better. Now, normally you’d take MCT oil (medium-chain triglycerides) in the morning to get more energy, or even before you work out, to run your body on ketones.

But I thought about a condition called sleep apnea, in which you experience a lack of oxygen and have poor sleep. Apparently, it’s important to get oxygen while you sleep!

Ketones give you oxygen. They give you more than glucose. You’ll also get less carbon dioxide (CO2).

Your brain prefers ketones if there are enough of them in your blood. If you’re just starting out in ketosis, or you’re not intermittent fasting, or simply want to get more ketones to your brain, you can take MCT oil. It converts easily to ketones without needing to use bile or digestive enzymes from your pancreas. It just gets absorbed.

Start with a small amount before bed; just half a teaspoon. Too much at first can cause digestive issues. Over time, work your way up to one teaspoon. Take it just before bed. After a week; I can say that it certainly improved the quality of my sleep.

Something else about ketones. There are parts of your brain that run on ketones, and parts that don’t. The pineal gland runs on ketones and is where the melatonin that helps you sleep is located. As well, your hypothalamus and pituitary love ketones. The hypothalamus contains nuclei of regulatory cells that combine the autonomic nervous system with your endocrine system. One of the nuclei is involved with the circadian waves of sleep; in other words, your internal clock. If you support it with the right fuel, you potentially can enhance your sleep.

Until recently, we didn’t know your brain could run on ketones. We believed it could run only on glucose. Sometimes, like when you talk with your doctor, for example, they might not have this information about your brain being able to run on ketones. Your brain can’t run on fatty acids, because it’s composed of a lot of them and it would be dangerous to run on its own tissue.

Give MCT oil a try and see if it helps improve your sleep.

You may have saved my life with this tip! I have Parkinson’s and haven’t slept well for years. Have taken 1/2 teaspoon of MCT for the last three nights and slept well. Thank you so much Dr Berg.

MCT is like morphine to me (mentally). I sleep like a baby, FAST (can't take during the day, only before bed). Also a pleasant warmth in my body (mct is thermogenic).
Now I understand my reaction more, why I get tired and depressed if I take it during the day (same feeling as I get from too much melatonin). The best natural sleeping aid out there.

Thanks doc!
I’ve been on MCT oil for a week and my sleeps are deep and I wake up refreshed. Trying to stay in ketosis. I’m on the keto diet. My weight loss is so slow but my mood is good and I’ve been able to stop my antidepressant 👍🏻

Holy cow tried this last night and I slept great and my heart rate dipped into the 40's for an extended period of time. Been doing IF/HK for a while now and this was a game changer for sleep.

Dr. Berg, I would really love to hear, now 2 years later, an update on this to know if you still recommend it, if you recommend any modifications (such as timing or dosage, what to consume with it or what shouldn't be consumed with it) and/or if you've noticed any unexpected benefits or negative effects in other areas of the body? It will mean adding more calories to the daily total, and yes it's a small amount, but I would rather not add any more if this doesn't really work. TIA!

Yes it does. My sleep wasn't good and I starting eating eggs with coconut oil at night. The past weeks have been fantastic in regards to sleep. It's been awhile that I haven't had quality sleep. Makes sense what you explain here.

This. This is what I should have taken when I started keto. MCT is super effective for me. This is from someone who's on day 2 of taking MCT.

I started doing this about 2 months ago. It really helps. It doesn’t start doing anything noticeable the first night but after a week it adds up. I use a full tablespoon but make sure you can handle that much before you start with that high a dose.

Will try this because back to school with my kids has been so hard on my sleep this year.

I was thankful to see this as an ad just now. I typically take MCT in the morning because it seems to improve my all around well being through out the day, especially these crazy ass days!! However, I have not taken any at night to see if it helps improve my sleep. I tend to get the worst keto squirts when taking MCT oil but not so much so taking coconut oil. I'm excited to try just a tiny amount tonight for my sleep. Thank you Dr Berg.

A few hours before bed I eat a couple eggs. Then one hour before bed I take MCT oil with Kefir. This is my recipe to defeat insomnia. I can't believe how well it works. I sleep close to 7 hours without any interruption.

I'm sleeping so much better since I start with the MCT, I used to wake up 2 3 times a night. Now I sleep all night 🙏

I have been taking MCT oil for about 2 months now. I'm up to 1-2 tbsp a day. I was only taking in the morning with my coffee. Recently I started to take it in the evening with my tea, and boy the difference in my sleep vs not taking it. I can definitely attest to the quality of sleep I get when I take it in the evening. I thought it was just a mind thing. Thanks Dr. Berg for this video.

It works for me! I was and still am so amazed! I am such a light sleeper that I hardly ever have one straight night of sleep. I started taking half a teaspoon and now I have nights where I sleep a full 6/7 hours. And when I do wake up, I can actually get back to sleep fairly easy. I couldn't believe it, since not sleeping seemed to have become a part of me (I am 50). I will continue with the mct oil, absolutely! Thanks for this suggestion, dr.Berg🌷🌷🌷🌷
