Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell has returned to the unfriendly skies to save the world and try and prove he’s the best of the best in Top Gun Maverick and he’s brought two bags full of nostalgia and extreme methods of filmmaking. Filmed with real world F-18s with real pilots flying around pretend pilots seated behind them, the adrenaline fueled sequel is full of nods and tributes as well as an attention to detail that’s staggering. Maverick faces his own obsolescence, his shortcomings as a surrogate father, and the ramifications of his whirlwind romantic life when he was younger. All of this unfolds in the place made famous by the first movie, Fightertown USA. A new crop of the best of the best are gathered to make them even more bestier with the help of Maverick who has still not bucked his authority bucking ways. Old faces like Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer return and are joined by new faces including Miles Teller as Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s REO last seen singing Great Balls of Fire with his father in the first movie. From real world planes to unreal theoretical planes, specific background props, and even a shout out to another 80s movie all together, Top Gun Maverick is an old school thrill ride made with new school techniques. We’ll take a dive into all the nods to the original as well as some of the details and behind the scenes secrets that made this big movie possible. Do you think this movie will go down as being better than the original?

I'm very glad they kept holding the release date for this film. It is made for movie theater level presentation.

I’m surprised you all didn’t mention the handling of Val Kilmer’s real life health condition and they way they handled it in the movie.

The Migs were never actually identified as Soviet, or belonging to any other country; they were simply non-descript bad guys.

Came into the theater not expecting much. Knew it would be good because Tom Cruise was in it but never expected to be amazed and watched it another 10+ times without feeling bored (like most movies after watching just 2 times) every single time. Gonna watch it again tonight!

The fact that he’s still buff as hell is so impressive! Not too many 59 year olds could have rocked those beach scenes with those 20 somethings!!!

Just watched it in the theater, it was like a trip down memory lane. Good feelings!

All the scenes of the planes landing and taking off from aircraft carriers were filmed on the USS Lincoln that was the ship my uncle served his last deployment on and he was there while they were filming. And the crew preparing the runways in the carrier were not actors they were actual crew members that serve on the ship

It's my opinion that when it comes to acting without saying anything nobody beats Val Kilmer.💯

I really liked the movie and it brought back a lot of memories of flying the F-18. By the end of the movie I was soaked in sweat like I used to be at the end of a dogfight! Sure there were some glaring technical inaccuracies, but there were also some subtle things that only a fighter pilot might catch- like paddling off the G-limiter before the 10g pull. The F-18 was limited to 8.0 G by the flight control computer but you could activate a paddle switch on the stick to override it. That was only to be used in an emergency because it could over stress the aircraft. Very entertaining movie overall though!

One obscure thing I noticed was a reference to the “finger” moment during the original hangar briefing. This time Phoenix gives Hangman a subtle middle finger during Maverick’s first briefing.

The ONLY way anybody “missed” what you listed here in the movie is either they haven’t watched the original Top Gun or they fell asleep in the theatre, everything you listed is obvious and intended for the audience to catch. Also Luke never slams on his breaks and let’s a Tie Fighter pass him, get your facts right before posting things that are false

Just watched the movie 2 hours ago. It is so good! You can see Tom worked his back off to make the film a success! Top Gun 1 and 2 are equal, ! Well done, Ice man and Maverick!

The Darkstar experimental aircraft Maverick flies at the beginning of the movie was actually designed by the Lockheed Skunkworks engineers, who were brought in by the movie's producers just for that purpose, to make it as realistic as possible. I understand the Skunkworks guys really like doing the job, because they didn't have to be completely bound by the limits of reality.

The old F14 requiring an air-start to start the engines was a nice funny touch.. Classic aviation humor..
