"No" means "no." Right?

Nope.

Did you know there's a caveat?

"Unless you really want to search some guy's car. In which case, ask them again while acting as though they had consented the first time they told you "No.""

Welcome to Orlando, Florida.

I have absolutely no suspicion but I'm still going to ask to search your car. For a lawyer, he certainly answered more questions than I would ever consider.

"Hey your license plate is partially obstructed, cool if I search your car?"

The first day in my first class in law school my criminal law professor (an ex federal prosecutor) told us never to consent to a search of your vehicle. There really is no upside.

This is known as a pretext stop. They are phishing for something and trying to find something else. They are running his tags and license. He does have to ID, but does not and should not consent to a search!!! Please know your rights, brothers and sisters!!!

Calling you "brother" doesn't mean they are your friend.

When a cop uses that line "we just want to make sure you don't have anything illegal in the car, " you have NOTHING to prove to them unless you've been charged with a crime. Never, never, NEVER consent to police searches.

He really tried to trick him into a search, I really want to know how far they would have went if he didn't say he was a lawyer

Notice how quickly he talks trying to get permission to search the car. Seemed like a BS stop to begin with and then they want to search the guy's car without any sort of basis?

This guy is a poster child for the reason people hate cops. Taillights out can I search your car?

I love how so many cops try to search everyone's car without cause.

I like how the cop just repeats the same question, “And so of course you wouldn’t mind, JUST to confirm what you are saying is true.. if we search the vehicle?” I’ve been in sales all my life. That’s a highly crafted phrase meant to gain compliance and affirmation. The “of course”, and the “just” are minimizing phrases (it’s not a big deal), the “you wouldn’t mind” is a confusingly negatively oriented phrase (the citizen must either say “Yes, I mind”, and in order to say “No, I disagree”), and the entire structure, pacing, and overall delivery of the phrase is intended to receive a “Yes”.

Edited for clarity

This was a big deal two years ago when I lived in Florida, the license plate frame thing. Everyone who fought it in court won. Police depts. were warned it would invalidate the rest of the stop.

Just because you refuse a search does not mean you're concealing something. Sometimes you wanna go on your way and have a time-frame.

They never want to face the real criminals. You know the actual dangerous ones...

He didn't do anything further because the man is an attorney and he would get his ass handed to him. The cop was a straight arrogant jerk.

This is why an increasing amount of people distrust the police.

Why would they even feel it’s ok to ask to search his car for a traffic infraction?!?!

Instantly, upon hearing he is a lawyer, he gives him a warning. See how civil things can be when you meet someone who knows, and practices in the field of justice under the Constitution.
