Vertigo Treatment with Simple Exercises (BPPV) - Ask Doctor Jo

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, better known as BPPV, can literally stop you in your tracks. Make sure you are properly diagnosed because the symptoms can be something more serious and dangerous if not properly diagnosed.

The first exercises are called Brandt-Daroff exercises. Start in an upright, seated position. Then move into a lying position on one side with your nose pointed up at about a 45-degree angle. Stay in this position for about 30 seconds (or until the vertigo subsides, whichever is longer). Then move back to the seated position and stay for 30 seconds. Repeat on the other side. This should be done 5 times, 2 times a day holding each position for 30 seconds.

The next set of exercises are called Gaze Stabilization exercises. Keeping your head in one spot, move your eyes side to side as smoothly as you can 10 times. Then move them up and down 10 times. Next move them at a diagonal 10 times one way, and then 10 times the other way. You might get some symptoms while doing this, but if you can keep moving them, the symptoms should go away.

Finally, you are going to move your head, but keep your eyes focused on one spot. Hold out your finger in front of you, or put an X or A, or any letter on a piece of paper on the wall. While focusing on the one spot, move your head side to side as smoothly as you can 10 times. Then move it up and down 10 times. Next move it at a diagonal 10 times one way, and then 10 times the other way.

I'm going to try the eye exercises. I tell people who never experienced vertigo that I wouldn't wish it on my worse enemy.

I am a truck driver and I woke up in Tuesday  morning with vertigo. Having never heard of it in the past it scared me real bad! I laid there for four hours and it only seemed to get worse. Not being from the area I was at I was forced to call 911. They did all the tests to rule out all the other things then said I had  BPPV.. Now the hospital never tried any excercises but pumped me with  medicine for the dizziness and nausea and headache  that is associated with it. I suffered from 7 AM all day until it finally subsided about 4 PM. They released me Wednesday and instructed me to follow up with my doctor. I was still having issues with dizziness but no where nearly as bad as Tuesday. Today is Friday and I was still having dizziness, I did a couple different excercises including yours and my dizziness went away. Knowledge rocks!! Thank you!

Thank you so much for the exercise instruction!!! I had to try for a while before I think it me I got up out of bed and grabbed two brooms to use as canes and started walking baby steps!!! Believe it or not, it started getting easier and easier as I went!!! At the start I couldn't move my head at all and only a few steps at a time. Very slowly I gained confidence and started walking faster with more slight head movements!!! Very slowly it got easier and easier!!! I went from being scared to stand for longer than 5 seconds to walking, fast walking, jogging and jogging while moving my I put 11 kilometers on in one evening ( 4 hours steady). At the end I had walk/jogged 6 out of the 11 kilometers!!!! Now when I went into the house and settled down for a while...I got up and felt a bit dizzy again, ...but not like before.!!!!
The next day I went walking again, doing what I did the day before and guess what???? No dizziness!!!!
The ABSOLUTE WORST THING YOU CAN DO IS REST AND LAY DOWN!! WITH THAT BEING SAID....DON'T JUST GET UP AND RUN!!! MAKE YOURSELF SAFE TO MOVE AROUND AND EXERCISE TO YOUR ABILITIES!! HAVE SOMEONE HELP YOU WALK AROUND AND BE THERE FOR DON'T JUST LAY DOWN AND WORRY!!! THERE IS AN END TO THIS CONDITION!!! You will see once you start moving around and don't be discouraged if it doesn't happen right now!!! It will come....!!!! For me it took a week before I was driving around and eating normal this helps at least one person....cheers all!!

I can't believe it worked. After epley maneuver and half somersault failed for me, I thought of giving it a try. 14 days of agony finally comes to an end. May god bless you

I experienced vertigo for the first time 2 days ago. I had a glass a wine before I went to bed woke up to the room was spinning like crazy and I wanted to vomit. I was like, i know I am not drunk impossible. The only thing made it better was laying down. I had a friend take me to the doctor. They prescribed these exercises along with methylprednisolone for fluid in both ears and meclizine for the dizziness. I feel a lot better today. I will continue to do this excercises. I don't ever want to experience this again. I learn something new everyday. Thanks

Thank you for these exercises, Dr. Jo. I had vertigo for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Since then, I've experienced swaying/bobbing and weaving. I'm more than happy to work on this myself and try to clear this up first instead of using medications. It's so helpful to read everyone's comments to know I am not the only one and to hear their stories about what works for them. Thank you for your videos!!

Thank you for this! I rarely suffer from this, but every now and then I wake up with extreme vertigo! It happens maybe a few times a year and today was the day it decided to happen! Always feel better after doing these moves.

Literally called my mom crying cuz I knew that I was just experiencing this. She used to have vertigo but started doing exercises as soon as she knew about them and now no longer has vertigo. The vertigo I experienced right now wasn’t that bad but I’m definitely gonna do these exercises. Thank you!!!

Thank you Dr. Jo. My mother and I discovered through your excessive that it's her right ear that's causing vertigo. We followed your exercise, had a laugh and prayed she'll be made well. I thank the Lord Jesus for the gift of you and this video.
