Delete Part Of An Image In Inkscape

In past tutorials we've gone over various ways to use Inkscape for removing backgrounds from images and isolating subjects from the rest of the image. In this tutorial, however, we'll be going over how to delete part of an image in Inkscape. This will be accomplished by creating what's called an inverse clipping mask.

Inkscape could benefit from the inclusion of a tool designed specifically for seamlessly erasing across all layers, while also providing the option to render the erased portion transparent. The current process feels less intuitive compared to erasing objects in simpler applications like Paint. Nevertheless, I'm grateful for the video you shared. The align horizontal/vertical setting is going to prove incredibly useful for my upcoming work. I've been wondering about ways to align objects prior to stumbling upon this resource. Your assistance is greatly appreciated! 🙏

Slightly different method: use the blue rectangle & zebra mask, make the rectangle white, zebra mask black, group them, then apply the grouped object as a mask on the image. This way the mask/clip itself becomes non-destructive :) And you can use gradients etc. in the mask, too.

I don't understand why such an obvious function has so many complex steps with such unintuitive labels. There are buttons and commands everywhere. It seems like one of those could be this function with a single click.

Exaclty What I needed. Can't pay for Adobe and love drawing in Inkscape. Keep these tuts simple and stratight to the point PERFECT! BUT....I'm hoping that other tuts of yours involving this encompess layers and grouping as I am having issues with that. As powerful as INK is...it aint simple. lol.

Thank you for that. I have been wanting to get more familiar with Inkscape, and may have reached the tipping point now.

Very interesting tutorial! I am having a great time learning the ins and outs of Inkscape. I was thinking about doing something with the Vitruvian man using this same technique. I want to make a design peak through the cut out with a group of vector objects, so hopefully I can figure that out without a problem!

Can you use this same mechanism to for instance save the outlined zebra component as a separate image with no background. So the desired final product would be the irregular edged zebra to use within another separate project?
