Hurricane Helene leaves at least 40 dead

At least 40 people have reportedly died after Hurricane Helene made landfall in the US yesterday.

Helene began in the Gulf of Mexico, increasing intensity as it moved toward the Florida coast.

The storm made landfall in the state’s northwest as a Category 4 system.

Helene is weakening as it moves further inland, bringing rain and wind speeds of up to 50 kilometres towards large metropolitan areas.

In Tallahassee, we had a miracle, a Cat 4 Hurricane passed over with peak winds of 41 mph. No other way to explain it. Helene came right through here and only broke one 4" limb off a tree in my yard. It was over in 2 hrs with nothing but a well watered yard. Many had it much worse.

My power came back on an hour ago, here in NC near Charlotte. I 🙏🏼 all of those homes and businesses and traffic lights get quickly restored. My condolences to those who have lost family and friends due to Helene 🙏🏼

So sad & scary! Praying for all affected! Dams further inland are at risk of breaking which poses additional risk. Many outages, road closures, devastated homes & businesses along the shore lines. Some structures collapsed, while waves destroyed the lower floor of others (going right through these houses). I saw a video of a house floating away & collapsing in the rushing water. Water always wins & is insanely powerful. Like a Tsumani, only thankfully Floridians had some warning. At the height of the storm, it was too dangerous for search & rescue to continue & one Florida County instructed residents who didn't evacuate to write their name & identifying information on their arm or leg with a permanent marker, so their body could be identified if found after the storm. So ominous & sad. 😥🙏🏽 There was another hurricane not long before this one in Florida where y a 15 year old boy died when a tree fell on his house when he was asleep in his bed. Broke my heart to hear such a sad tale! May God rest that childs soul & everyone loved & lost...even those who may not have had friends or family to love them, I pray for them.
