Is OLD camera tech worth it?

got a question from a viewer regarding whether they should go for the Nikon D700 or the newer D610 both full frame and both with their own benefits. Here i give my advice and also a link to someone else who has had this dilema before as well

I bought a used d700 a few months ago with 35k clicks (verified), NO REGRETS!

My hammer is 10 years old. It still hits the nail. And a 7 year old camera doesn't t suddenly stop being good. People get too hung up on things that have so little to do with making memorable pictures.

I just got back from a week long photo assignment three days ago --- hours, hours, and hours of photo edits

Very popular topic. Well he almost answers it for himself by saying he doesn't need video. The 700 is a top of the line low light beast for nikon. Now the only issue that should remain is warranty. Do you feel comfortable buying a 700 without warranty used or rather play it safe and get a new 610. That should be the only thing for debate. I shoot with the 700 and don't regret buying it used at all.

Well here's an opinion from the canon side
Recently i've upgraded from a canon 5D Original to a 6D (aprox 7 years technology difference) and the difference in image quality is minimal (at low isos)
The only thing that was frustrating on the 5D me was the screen. Shooting at apertures larger than f2 made cheking focus impossible on that small, low resolution screen.
I was rasing the iso at the max (iso 1600, and equivalent extension 3200) no problem. I've shot some weddings with it and the results were top notch.
Sure... the 6D can do video and shoot at iso 12800  with usable results (even 25600 for web use) ... but i do not find myself doing that to often
If i were using apertures smaller then 2.8 (or if cheking accurate focus on the go was not crucial) i would still be shooting happily with the 5D and be perfectly happy with the results

I definitely think old tech is worth it, Canon 5D mark 1 is amazing deal right now, you can get it low as 350€ now a days, it is a total bargain. It haves something magical in its pictures look, weak AA filter some say. Its autofocus and screen is quite bad, but other than that is a great camera even in todays standards.

I'm contemplating buying another camera, either to replace my D5200 with a better APS-C camera or get a full frame. My budget sadly either allows getting a D7100/D700 with the lens I want, or get a D610 and no lens. All my lenses are FX lenses except my kit lens, which I would replace with a 24-70mm, that way I'd have a 24-70, 50mm and 70-300. I do a lot of landscapes and wildlife photography with some portrait work. Any suggestions? I don't do video

I would find a good used d700 and spend the savings on lenses. D700 and d600 image quality is pretty close...js my opinion.

The D600 is a camera to consider being that its only about £170 more expensive 'new' than the D700 'second hand'. It would be a shame to sacrifice so much new technology for a mere £170 saving.

my opinion is always buy the newer camera if u can, coz it is digital devices and its always getting better

wrong advice - now D700 costs under 500$/E, but used D610 is still 900+ (cuz new ones droped a few hundred) and image quality of D610 is way superior (even high ISOs) - but who need that - it is all about rugged body and confidence, that you can crack a nuts with your camera body...
