Love the color that came out of my D200 and 300mm af-d. Still used it long after it was "outdated".

Is older camera tech worth it? Camera bodies, lenses or flashes? #photography

Not sure about old cameras but I just love old manual lenses. I own 8 from the Soviet Union and Japan and apart from losing infinity on my D610 and D7100, they offer so much quality for so ridiculously cheap prices. Usually fast, great colours and bokeh, pin sharp or deliciously soft depending on the model and the aperture you shoot at, I highly recommend old and very old lenses (the oldest one I have is from 1958 and works great).

:) it's all still worth it! I started off with a brand new t2i then sold that thing and got a 5Dclassic, the full frame sensor IQ beat that of the 18mp t2i. Then I bought super old 1D from 2001..used it for a wedding and it worked flawlessly. Then I got a new 5Dmkii that pretty much outdated already. Then I sold the 1D and 5Dclassic and got a 1Dmark3 that is around the same age as the 5Dmkii both top out at a usable 6400 so I'm pretty much using 2007/08 tech for my main cameras.

I can't really say too much on Digital Bodies.  Since I've only used the t2i and the D610 I shot film for a long time and the bodies didn't mean as much.  I used a Nikon F from the 1950's and a Minolta XG-M from 1981, but I finally went digital.

Lenses I do have a lot more experience with.  I've used plenty old lenses and, when it was all I had, and I was getting good results I sung their praises.  But, now that I'm using current generation lenses WOAH!!! the sharpness wide open is light years ahead of my old ones.

For the longest time I used my Canon 50mm 1.4.  I refused to even try the 50mm 1.8II because it was plastic, and what I had was better right?  I was the same way with my D610 and 50mm 1.8D vs. the 50mm 1.8G.  But once I finally gave the new glass a shot, I was blown away on how sharp I could get my images even wide open.  After all what is the point of my old f1.4 if I couldn't nail focus till almost f2.8.

I will go a head and point out that I think the older stuff is an awesome place to start.  To get you into the game, but really newer generation lenses really up your game, more than buying new bodies.

I love older lenses.  I just picked up a Nikon 50 1.4D.  It's one of my favourite lenses right now.  ;)  I still shy away from used bodies, usually because people ask too much for them, imo.  I seen a D700 going for $1, 800, while the D610 was only $1, 900.  Again, just my opinion, not that I'm right.

Yes, older lenses is relevant more than the older bodies. Older gear is for photographers who know what they need to get the job done.

I shoot a D300s and a D700 my lenses are older.  The older Pro gear is amazing lenses are built better the gear is just tougher.  A lot of the new gear is directed to the prosumer market.  Buy the older pro gear and never buy the latest and greatest I've done it and it is a mistake.  There are always issues and you loose money on brand new gear.
